A groundbreaking ceremony for a new stadium at Mesa Verde High School in Citrus Heights is set to take place on August 30. The stadium is a signature project for the campus and funding was made possible through voter-approved bond money allotted by Measure N.

The project’s design includes a brand-new sports stadium which will have a seating capacity of just over 2,500, a synthetic track and field, and new bleachers, press box, concessions and restroom buildings. Other various exterior upgrades are also planned, including parking lot and tennis court refurbishment.

In a news release, San Juan Unified School District announced that demolition of above ground facilities began over the summer, including that of the tennis courts, storage shed and track and field. Completion of the stadium is anticipated to be in the spring of 2023.

Mesa Verde’s campus has received other improvements throughout the last two decades, including the construction of a new library building and a new gymnasium.

Lost Creek Court, Cessna Drive, Brocade Drive, and Candlelight Way all border the perimeter of the site where the stadium is to be constructed. Some residents who live in the surrounding neighborhoods expressed their concerns in a CBS Sacramento news report dated April 18, 2022. Homeowners worried over potential late-night noise and bright lighting during home games, and potential increases in parking difficulties and crime.

In an email to The Sentinel, Sarah Gallivan, who works closely with Mesa Verde’s facilities team on bond projects, said the San Juan district is planning to implement a variety of measures in response to residents’ concerns. The district is exploring options such as, more fencing and gates within neighborhoods to block access and discourage neighborhood parking, utilizing a volume limiter on the PA system, adding vision and noise control louvers on the top of bleachers, and planting evergreen trees along the home side of the stadium. The stadium lights will also have a hard stop at 10 p.m..

Gallivan said the signature project “will transform the culture of the campus,” and that the new stadium will be utilized for a wide range of athletic programs on campus. The new facilities will also be available for the surrounding community to use.

Other alumni and members of the community have expressed their excitement over the construction of the new stadium on the Mesa Verde Football Facebook Page after the signature project details were posted to the page on March 22, 2022.

Local resident Annabelle Corsi, a class of ’99 graduate of Mesa Verde, expressed support for the stadium in a message to The Sentinel last week and said she plans to attend games.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new stadium will take place on Aug. 30 at 10:30 a.m., on Mesa Verde’s campus located at 7501 Carriage Drive. The community is invited to attend.

    Sentinel staff report–
Highlighting local flavors, sounds, and history, several Citrus Heights business and community groups were featured on Fox 40’s latest “In Your Neighborhood” segment on Friday morning, with videos subsequently published on the TV station’s website.

A three-minute segment on Beer Dogs, located at Sylvan Corners, showed off a variety of the eatery’s 10-inch gourmet hot dogs, as well as local craft brews on tap. Beer Dogs opened last September at 7032 Sylvan Rd. and has since earned a solid 4-star rating in online reviews. Although forgoing a beer for the morning segment, Fox 40’s Gary Gelfand took viewers through Beer Dog’s local craft brews on tap, which include Auburn Ale House, Loomis Basin, and the Lincoln-based Knee Deep Brewing Company.

A Chicago native, Gelfand focused attention on the Chicago Dog, which is topped with raw onions, specialty relish, pickle spears, tomato slices, and celery salt. Piled-high “loaded” tater tots were also featured on the segment, along with fried avocado — a new appetizer Beer Dogs is trying out.

Two videos were also published highlighting the Citrus Heights Community Marching band, whose members were set up for Fox 40’s camera in Rusch Park. Band Director Cody Tickner introduced the band, which has volunteers ranging in age from 6 to 87. Tickner said the band began in 2005 as a temporary feature for the city’s Red, White and Blue Parade and now performs at area events about 20 times each year.

“We’re called the ambassadors of Citrus Heights,” Tickner says in the short interview. “We like to show off what Citrus Heights has to offer.”

The Citrus Heights Historical Society was also featured on Friday with an interview and tour inside the historic Rusch Home, but the video was not published online as of Saturday evening. Additional information about the Society can be found on their Facebook page.

“In Your Neighborhood” segments have also featured other cities in the region, like Placerville and Fairfield. Last September, the station aired another neighborhood segment on Citrus Heights, featuring Mesa Verde High School, Steve Cook’s Fireside Lanes, and Sunrise Rollerland.

In an effort to showcase and support local artists, the “Hidden Treasures Art Show” will return to Sunrise Mall during the first two weekends in March — this year featuring artwork from more than 30 different Citrus Heights residents.

Hosted each year by the Citrus Heights History and Arts Commission since 2014, this year’s event will be held from 12-5 p.m. on March 4-5th and March 11-12th. Admission for the event is free and open to the public, and organizers say the event will be family friendly with live music and refreshments from 3-5 p.m.

According to a news release from the City of Citrus Heights this week, the art show will also feature various live painting demonstrations by Citrus Heights residents. Live music will be performed daily by Christian Rico, a Citrus Heights resident and classic guitarist.

The news release said featured local visual artists include Becky Herz, Betty Evans, Christopher Grimes, Denise Phillips, Diane Houle, Ed Chaney, Jeanne Snyder, Joe Lesh, Lianna Peters, Luanne Leineke, Maura Clark, Richard Nederlof, and Yazmin Tabba.

Group artists will also be featured, with art from the Citrus Heights Art and Wine Day Meetup, Creative Collaborations Crew of Citrus Heights, Sacramento Suburban Writers Club, Mesa Verde High School, Sunrise Recreation and Park District, Sunrise Tech Center, as well as literary artists and local veterans.

The Hidden Treasures exhibit is held inside the Sunrise Mall in a space the mall donates each year, near Sears. Prior exhibits have highlighted different aspects of local history and art, with the first two years highlighting historic items and art pieces donated by local residents or obtained by the commission.
