Animal Services Officer Ruben Hernandez passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 1, the Citrus Heights Police Department announced on Wednesday.

Hernandez joined the City of Citrus Heights’ Animal Services team in April 2012 and was “exceptionally skilled in investigating animal cruelty cases,” according to a Sept. 4 social media post by CHPD. He was also credited for being able to handle and calm aggressive dogs.

“Ruben’s dedication and commitment to the Department, the city, and the community were evident in his training of new staff, his mentoring of team members, and his availability to help all of us whenever needed,” the department wrote, adding that his goal was to “make a difference” and serve his community “professionally and compassionately.”

Local residents, animal advocates, businesses and Citrus Heights Police Department staff expressed their sadness, offered condolences, and thanked Hernandez for his commitment to the city on the department’s Facebook page.

Animal advocate and rescuer Melissa Hayden said she and Hernandez worked together on catching stray dogs when he worked with Sacramento County before he came to Citrus Heights. Recently, Hayden has worked with Hernandez in an effort to trap, neuter and release cats. Hayden’s favorite memory was when Hernandez helped her catch a dying kitten by sitting on the ground and waiting for the cat to come to him.

“He loved all the animals,” Hayden said.

According to the release, Hernandez loved his family, fishing, the San Francisco 49ers and was an active volunteer in his church.
