Census response rate slows in Citrus Heights

Sentinel staff report–
The Census self-response rate in Citrus Heights appears to have hit a plateau, as the rate rose by just 1.4% over the past 45 days. Statewide, response rates ticked up by about 4% during the same time.

Prior to mid-June response rates rose more rapidly, rising to 70% by June 13.

The response rate in Citrus Heights now stands at 71.4%, which is still well above the California average of 64% and the national average of 62.7%.

Response rates vary widely across the United States. Minnesota holds the record among the 50 states, currently boasting an average 72.1% response rate, according to the US Census Bureau website. New Mexico appears to have the lowest response rate, of 52.6%.

California’s final self-response rate in 2010 was 68.2%, but with the Census being able to be taken online, there was some hope for a higher response rate.

The coronavirus pandemic has hampered some of the Census efforts this year, with deadlines being extended to October, and in-person Census efforts and follow-up delayed.

The Census can be taken online at 2020census.gov.
