    Sentinel staff report–
The City of Citrus Heights has opted to discontinue its annual Red, White & Blue Parade this year, citing declining attendance and participation among various reasons for the decision.

“While the parade was a successful event in the city for many years, there has been declining public participation in the planning efforts, parade entries, and event attendance in recent years,” a statement posted on the city’s website on Monday said. Additional reasons listed included increased traffic on Sunrise Boulevard and recent evaluations by the city and county finding that a future parade would “require professional traffic control measures at a much greater expense to the city and the event budget.”

The city also said the Sunrise MarketPlace, which has been a past sponsor of the parade, “has put its efforts into new, exciting summer events and as a result have reduced capacity to support the parade.”

The city said it will “instead focus on supporting other growing events, and preparing for a signature event in 2020.” Although not specifying what the event in 2020 will be, the statement said future announcements will be made to involve residents in the planning process and gain input on “what event you would like to see in your city.”

The city listed the 20th Anniversary Block Party in 2017, Sunday Funday, and the annual Howl-O-Ween parade and festival among events that it said “have become more successful than ever and are drawing thousands of residents from all over the Citrus Heights community and region.”

“While the City will not be producing a parade this year, we plan to take the existing resources to enhance these successful, unique, and growing events,” the statement said.

Last year’s parade was the city’s 19th year hosting the Red, White & Blue Parade. The parade route ran along Sunrise Boulevard, beginning just north of Madison Avenue and ending near Greenback Lane in front of Sunrise Mall.

    Sentinel staff report–
The sidewalks along Sunrise Boulevard will once again be lined with parade-watchers as the city’s 2018 Red, White & Blue Parade takes place on June 23.

The Saturday parade is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and will travel along Sunrise Boulevard, starting just north of Madison Avenue and ending at Sunrise Mall. A pancake breakfast will also be served for $5, provided by the Citrus Heights Rotary Club, according to a parade flier.

The annual event typically features 50-100 parade entries and floats, and draws several thousand attendees from Citrus Heights and surrounding areas. Drivers should be aware that Sunrise Boulevard between Madison Avenue and Greenback Lane will be closed for several hours on the morning of the parade.

Last year’s parade featured two skydivers dropped from a plane, along with a special float to celebrate the city’s 20th birthday. Other parade floats and entries typically feature various civic clubs, businesses, bands, car clubs and other groups.

Traditionally held on the fourth Saturday in June each year, the parade dates back around Citrus Heights’ founding two decades ago and was originally created as a “happy birthday” to the city. The event became known as the “Red, White & Blue Parade” in 2002, due in part to the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

Parade sponsors this year include the City of Citrus Heights, Sunrise Mall and Sunrise MarketPlace, 101.9 The Wolf, Hot 103.5, and 99.9 Air 1.

The sidewalks along Sunrise Boulevard will once again be lined with parade-watchers as the city’s 2016 Red, White & Blue Parade takes place on June 25.

The Saturday parade is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and will travel along Sunrise Boulevard, starting just north of Madison Avenue and ending near Greenback Lane at the Sunrise Mall.

Traditionally held on the fourth Saturday in June each year, the parade dates back around Citrus Heights’ founding nearly 20 years ago and was originally created as a “happy birthday” to the City, according to Michele Saario, the City’s Event and Community Center Technician. In 2002, Saario said the event became known as the “Red, White & Blue Parade,” due in part to the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

Organizers said about 70 entries have been received by those wishing to participate in parade this year. Entries typically feature various civic clubs, businesses, bands, car clubs and other groups.

Parade sponsors this year include the City of Citrus Heights, Sunrise Mall, 101.9 The Wolf, Hot 103.5, and Republic Services.

Following the parade, BloodSource will have mobile blood donation stations outside Sunrise Mall near Elephant Bar from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Donors will be offered a free ticket to the California State Fair, according to BloodSource spokeswoman Gayle Graves.
