A Walgreens store in Citrus Heights is in the process of replacing shopping carts that have all been stolen.

An employee at the Walgreens store at Sunrise Boulevard and Antelope Road confirmed with The Sentinel this week that the store has had all of its shopping carts stolen. The employee, who could not be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said missing carts are a problem for many stores, and that new carts are on order.

One shopper reached out to The Sentinel and expressed frustration at the lack of carts at the store, saying she is disabled and needs a cart to be able to shop. A visit by Sentinel staff to the store on Monday found the shopping cart storage area completely empty.

Citrus Heights Police Lt. Michael Wells said police do not have any shopping cart thefts reported at the 7787 Sunrise Blvd. location in recent months.

“That doesn’t mean that the thefts haven’t occurred, but they may not have been reported,” Wells said.

Theft of shopping carts has been an ongoing problem in Citrus Heights, with the city taking action last year to curb blight associated with carts left all over the city. In October, the Citrus Heights City Council passed an ordinance requiring businesses to have a shopping cart management plan, with identifying labels attached to each cart.

The city’s General Services Director, Regina Cave, told the council in October that the city’s retrieval service collects about 900 carts per year, with an additional 1,176 carts on average being retrieved from within the Sunrise MarketPlace business district, which has its own retrieval program.

Walgreens location at Sunrise Boulevard and Antelope Road has been the subject of an ongoing issue related to debris in the parking lot and surrounding sidewalk, an Aug. 18 report by The Sentinel shows.

In an email to The Sentinel in August, Citrus Heights Police Services Supervisor Debra Nathan confirmed officers had responded to the location multiple times. Most individuals leave the area by the time officers arrive, but police did make one arrest for shoplifting, Nathan said.

“[T]he Walgreens management team and corporate office have been cooperative and were quick to respond and remove the trash and debris left behind on their property,” she said.

Latest news briefs include the Walgreens store at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard being sold, a gas leak on Arcadia Drive causing evacuations on Wednesday, upcoming annual ‘Spooktacular’ festivities on Saturday, and news of a local documentary set to premiere at the community center.

Buyer pays $10M to purchase local Walgreens in Citrus Heights
The Walgreens store at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Greenback Lane has been sold for $10.41 million, according to County records and a report in the Sacramento Business Journal. Built in 2007, the 14,820 square-feet store is located on a two-acre parcel at 6199 Sunrise Blvd., with the sale price equating to just over $700 per square foot.

Although both the buyer and seller were unnamed in the Journal’s article, Sacramento County property records confirm the Walgreens store has been sold to a Newport Beach-based company called “Career Lofts Laguna Niguel, LLC.” The seller was listed as “Cordano Devco I, LLC,” which is connected to the large network of property and development companies run by the Sacramento-based Cordano family. A broker involved with the sale told The Journal the new buyer is typically a multifamily property investor, with such investors being attracted to less management commitment involved in retail leases versus multifamily. Earlier this year, the Montage multifamily apartment community in Citrus Heights sold for $74 million.

The annual event is sponsored by the City of Citrus Heights and the Antelope Crossing Business Association, which was formed in 2009 to help support and promote the two commercial and retail shopping centers located off Antelope Road near I-80. Gas leak closes down street near Sunrise Mall
A gas leak on Arcadia Drive Wednesday afternoon shut down traffic on the street from Sunrise Boulevard to Greenback Lane, officials said. The leak prompted evacuations of several businesses, including Sprouts, CVS, Starbucks, and Alley Katz, according to a KCRA report. The leak was reported on the 7900 block of Arcadia Drive around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 12, with Metro Fire reporting that PG&E crews had clamped the gas line and stopped the leak by about 6:45 p.m. No injuries were reported.

    Updated Feb. 9, 3:13 p.m.–
Citrus Heights police said an 85-year-old woman committed suicide in front of a Walgreens store on Greenback Lane Monday afternoon, after officers found her with three “self-inflicted” gunshot wounds to her chest.

Sgt. Jason Baldwin said officers responded to a call shortly after 12 p.m. regarding the well-being of an elderly woman seated in front of Walgreens, at the corner of Greenback Lane and Dewey Drive. After starting medical, Baldwin said officers shortly discovered a firearm “around the area of her leg,” and three small-caliber gunshot wounds to her chest.

The woman, later identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s office as Mary Mosier of Citrus Heights, was described by Baldwin as “semi-responsive” when officers arrived. She was then transported to a hospital and pronounced deceased.

Baldwin said a two-hour investigation was conducted on scene following the incident, in order to rule out any possibilities of “foul play” or murder.

“After a complete investigation of the incident, it was concluded that it was a suicide,” Sgt. Baldwin told The Sentinel by phone Tuesday morning. “No foul play is suspected.”

Asked to confirm if gunshots were fired outside Walgreens, Baldwin said “from what we gather, yes, that is where she committed suicide. It appears this was a planned suicide by her.”

Citrus Heights police are also investigating another death on Monday as a possible suicide, where a 46-year-old woman was found dead in an apartment on the 12000 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard around 12:05 a.m. on Feb. 8.
Sgt. Baldwin said both deaths are isolated and "unfortunate." He said police are still investigating the death on Fair Oaks Boulevard and was not able to confirm it was a suicide. [See story: Investigation: woman shot, killed at Citrus Heights apartment] Baldwin said anyone experiencing great depression or suicidal thoughts can contact the Citrus Heights Police Department to be connected with a variety of resources. "We just like people to know that hope is not lost, and they can always reach out to us." [follow text="Get local news:"] According to suicide prevention resources, warning indicators of suicide can include talking about feeling hopeless, having no reason to live, and other behavior or mood signs. A local Suicide Prevention Hotline, operated by WellSpace Health, can be reached at (916) 368-3111. The group says its hotline is also available for those concerned about friends or loved ones who may be suicidal. Update: Police later confirmed in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon that a suicide note had been located for the 85-year-old woman. The news release also confirmed that the 46-year-old's death on Fair Oaks Boulevard involved a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
