Following a successful outdoor movie showing of “Toy Story” last month, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Citrus Heights plans to continue hosting drive-in movie nights each month.

Associate Pastor Brock Groth told the Sentinel in an email Monday the church saw about 150 people at last month’s event, with a showing of the movie “Toy Story.” Groth said families from the church and associated school as well as the greater community were in attendance.

“It was great to see people gathering safely and enjoying the good food and family atmosphere,” Groth said.

The church plans to hold the second movie night on March 26 with a screening of Disney Pixar’s “Up.” Groth said organizers plan to have two food trucks along with ice cream treats for the next event.

This month’s movie will start later, between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., because of the time change and longer daylight hours, according to Groth. Food trucks are scheduled to arrive at 5:30 p.m.

Organizers are also planning an Easter food drive this month that will culminate the same night as the movie, and Groth is asking members of the community to bring non perishable food items. He said donations will benefit local food banks.

The church is located at 7869 Kingswood Drive, near Sunrise Boulevard.

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Citrus Heights is planning its first “Food Truck Friday” for Feb. 26, inviting community members to an outdoor screening of Toy Story.

An announcement on Facebook invites attendees to 7869 Kingswood Drive, just south of the Target store on Sunrise Boulevard, between 4-8 p.m. for the event. The “Pasta a la Mode” food truck will be on site, and viewers can tune their vehicle radios to an FM signal broadcasting an audio signal for the movie.

Associate Pastor Brock Groth told The Sentinel in an interview Thursday that he hopes the event will provide an opportunity for people in the community to come together.

“We just wanted people to be able to do something,” Groth said. “I know that COVID has made it pretty difficult for people to have some sort of event to do, and do it safely. We have the campus for it and we thought (we could give) people a chance to have some sort of activity, especially focused on the kids.”

He hopes the event will also give an opportunity for attendees to visit the church and school. St. Mark’s has a K-8 school on site.

Pasta a la Mode is slated to be at the church from 4-6 p.m., and the movie is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. A dessert truck is scheduled to arrive at 6 p.m.

Groth said there will also be an area for people to sit on blankets spaced apart. The church is also providing free popcorn, according to an announcement shared through social media.

The church’s first attempt at hosting the movie night had to be cancelled last month due to severe weather, but Groth said this week’s forecast looks promising. Drive-in showings hosted by the Sunrise MarketPlace last year also faced cancellations due to weather and smoke.

Groth said organizers hope to hold the event on the last Friday of every month, and bring in more food trucks.

“We’re thinking if it goes well and if there’s enough interest, we’ll bring in some more for the next month.”
