Got some household chemicals or other waste you think might not be okay to put in the trash or down the sink?

On Oct. 15, Citrus Heights residents will have the last of three annual opportunities to dispose of hazardous items like paint, cleaning supplies, vehicle batteries and fluorescent light bulbs, at a free “Household Hazardous Waste drop-off” event at Sunrise Mall.

Sponsored by Republic Services and the City, the drop-off is open to any Citrus Heights resident, as long as proof of residency – like a recent bill or photo ID – is provided.

Although many hazardous items will be accepted, a flier for the event states that ammunition, explosives, pharmaceuticals, radioactive material, household batteries, “home-generated sharps,” and used oil won’t be accepted. Some prohibited items for the drop-off — like used oil and household batteries — can be disposed of through Republic Services’ free weekly curbside program.

According to a calendar listing on CitrusHeights.net, residents can call (916) 638-9000 for more information or to schedule an appointment (not required).

    Drop-off event info:

    Time: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sunrise Boulevard was packed with people Saturday morning for the 2015 Red, White & Blue Parade in Citrus Heights

    Updated June 29, 9:40 p.m.–
Colorful banners, balloons and marching bands took over Sunrise Boulevard Saturday morning as thousands of residents, City leaders, businesses and others lined the street for Citrus Heights’ 16th annual Red, White and Blue Parade.

Kicking off at 9 a.m. with a high-speed entry by two skydivers dropped from high above Sunrise Mall, the hour-long parade traveled along Sunrise Boulevard between Madison Avenue and Greenback Lane, concluding in the Mall’s parking lot.

“It was just another fantastic, successful event for the City,” said Citrus Heights Councilman Mel Turner, who rode in the parade along with other council members. “Just love seeing the families, seeing the smiles on the faces, the kids — it makes you feel like everything’s right with the world.”

The parade drew participants and attendees from Citrus Heights and beyond, with parade-watcher Debbie Godinez coming from Rancho Cordova, as she said she does every year.

“It was great,” said Godinez, who brought along some of her family and grandkids. “We always come for the breakfast.”

Traditionally held on the fourth Saturday in June, the annual Red, White and Blue Parade was originally a “happy birthday” celebration to the City, eventually merging into what it is today.

“It’s honoring the birth of our nation and the birth of Citrus Heights, which go hand-in-hand,” said Councilman Turner. “That’s really what it’s all about… and we continue to celebrate that every year, and the colors just reinforce that.”

  • Saturday: Citrus Heights bank robbed, police arrest two

Citrus Heights police arrested two suspects Saturday after officers responded to a reported bank robbery at the Sunrise Boulevard Wells Fargo, where a possibly armed suspect entered the bank and demanded money, according to Lieutenant Jason Russo.

A press release by the Citrus Heights Police Department said the suspect fled in a dark vehicle along with an additional person, and was seen driving south on Sunrise Boulevard. The license plate for the vehicle indicated it was stolen, and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department was notified — with deputies shortly locating the vehicle, although unoccupied.

The Department says further investigation led officers to locate and detain two Rancho Cordova males, who are “suspected of being involved in the robbery” — although the investigation is still ongoing.
