Showing off scooter skills and performing tricks before a three-judge panel, about 40 contestants took part in the second annual Rusch Park scooter competition over the weekend.

“This is a great opportunity for kids in non-traditional sports to get out and show their skills,” said organizer Charles Stone, who was billed as “the brainchild” behind the competition.

The four-hour Saturday event was open to contestants 18 and under, with participants competing for prizes and the opportunity to win gold, silver and bronze medals for performing tricks like “whip-front scooter flip” and “buttercup.”

Victor Rodriguez, with the Sunrise Recreation and Park District, reported no injuries took place during the event, and said he hopes to host the competition two times a year in the near future.

The event was sponsored by the Citrus Heights Police Activities League and the park district.

    Updated April 21, 5:46 p.m.–
Wondering what’s going on in Citrus Heights this week? From community events to city council and planning commission meetings, there’s a lot going on around town.

This week’s local activities offer a variety of free options, with the annual Pet-a-Palooza event expected to draw thousands of pets and people to Rusch Park on Saturday, along with the Citrus Town Center’s family-fun Spring Celebration and Metro Fire’s CPR training at the Sunrise Mall.

Those hoping to make it to all three events may encounter some scheduling difficulties, as all of them are planned for the same day: April 25.

Pet-a-Palooza will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, while the two-hour Spring Celebration is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and the nearby CPR training offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On an event flier, Metro Fire says participants can learn how to save a life “in just 5 minutes,” so it shouldn’t be hard to squeeze in a quick trip if you’re trying to make it to multiple events.

There’s also two events this Friday, with Sacramento County Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan inviting residents to her 7:30 a.m. monthly “Community Cabinet Meeting” at the Citrus Heights Denny’s, and Gun Owners of California holding its annual crab feed at the Citrus Heights Community Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.

For those interested in local government, the Citrus Heights Planning Commission will be meeting this Wednesday at 7 p.m., and the city council will meet the following evening.

Planning commission members will hold several public hearings concerning electronic signs at Antelope Crossing, development of 23 residential lots at Sunrise Boulevard and Lawrence Avenue, and a Design Review Permit for a new Applebee’s on Auburn Boulevard. Commissioners will also be asked to approve a staff update to the City’s 5-year Capital Improvement Program.

Prior to its usual 7 p.m. meeting, City Council members will be holding a public study session at 6 p.m. on Thursday to assess a salvage plan for city hall, in light of the council’s recent approval for a new city hall and medical office building.

The council will also be asked to receive and file the City’s Quarterly Treasurer’s Report and authorize the city manager to apply for Homeless Veterans Support Program Funding. An annual report from the Sunrise Marketplace is also on the agenda, as well as consideration of a commercial lease agreement for an Auburn Boulevard property.

The Rusch Home in Citrus Heights is tucked away on the side of Antelope Road, holding a unique part of the city’s history.

Organizers with the Sunrise Recreation and Park District said the day’s activities included rosebush trimming, mulching, painting, small landscaping and irrigation projects, weeding, raking and some work on the interior of the home — topped off with a thank-you barbeque for volunteers.

Located at 7301 Antelope Rd., next to Rusch Park, the 1,712 square feet home was built in 1914 and is located on a 2-acre private garden setting. Due to its unique and historical significance, organizers say upkeep of the property requires extra levels of detailed maintenance and relies on the help of volunteers to stay presentable.

A video documentary detailing the Home’s history can be seen below:

  • ‘Meals on Wheels’ Celebrates 2 Millionth Meal with Citrus Heights Festivities

    Updated 2:40 p.m., Aug. 28 –

Citrus Heights Vice Mayor Sue Frost helped Sacramento’s Meals on Wheels deliver their 2 millionth meal to a Citrus Heights senior Thursday, followed by a celebration luncheon at the All Seasons Cafe in the Rusch Park Community Center.

Calling the event a “major milestone” since forming in 2010, organizers hope the event helped raise awareness to its meal program, along with giving seniors helpful information about Medicare and Social Security.

Meals on Wheels by ACC was formed four years ago in response to County budget cuts, which included discontinuing its senior meal program. As a non-profit organization, Meals on Wheels by ACC replaced the County-run program and now serves about 2000 seniors each weekday, while working to expand its service to parts of Placer County as well.

The organization strives to provide nutritious, affordable meals through its 23 All Seasons Cafe locations across the county, where seniors can meet for lunch and participate in various activities the cafe’s offer. A home meal delivery option is also available for those who are unable to travel to a cafe, as long as certain qualifications are met.

Recognizing the financial difficulties seniors can face, the non-profit group does not require payment for meals in any of its cafes or home deliveries, but does suggest a $2 donation per meal, according to Pat Chilton, Site Coordinator for All Season’s Cafe at the park’s community center.

The event was attended by several local leaders, including Sacramento County Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan and Congressman Ami Bera. It also was supported by Sunrise Recreation and Park District, the City of Citrus Heights, and Area 4 Agency on Aging.

Residents’ are invited to bring their tents and camp out, without having to leave the city.

Called Citrus Heights’ “legitimate tent city,” the annual Community Camp Out plans to take over Rusch Park with an activity-filled overnight event that promises to be fun for the whole family.

“This is an opportunity for mom and/or dad, grandpa and/or grandma to take the kids camping and never leave the city,” said Tonya Wagner, president of the Residents’ Empowerment Association of Citrus Heights.

Beginning in 2001, the event has continued to bring the community together outdoors, with organizers’ saying last year’s event drew over 200 people to Rusch Park.

Campers can expect swimming, crafts, games, face-painting, balloons and entertainment — along with a dinner barbecue served by city council members.  The evening will also feature a bonfire with s’mores, and star-gazing opportunities by the Sacramento Valley Astronomical Society members.

Following the overnight tent-stay, a “Campinental Breakfast” will be provided in the morning, with pancakes, eggs, sausage, fruit and beverages — for a fee of $6 for adults and $4 for kids.

The event is scheduled for July 12 and 13, with check-in beginning Saturday at 2 p.m. and continuing overnight until  check-out time at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Wagner recommends registering early online or by calling (916) 725-1585, as spaces are limited.
