It’s official: Pet-a-Palooza is returning to Citrus Heights in 2019

    Sentinel staff report–
The popular Pet-a-Palooza event will return to Rusch Park in Citrus Heights this year, after being held in William Land Park last year.

With the exception of 2018, Pet-a-Palooza has annually drawn headliner performances on stage in Citrus Heights, featuring popular singers as well as pet-friendly activities, vendor booths, and inflatable slides and activities for kids. Past events have attracted upwards of 10,000 attendees to Rusch Park, according to estimates from the Sunrise Recreation and Parks District.

Update: Entertainment lineup announced for Pet-a-Palooza 2019 at Rusch Park

Parks District Senior Recreation Services Manager Marty Buell confirmed the return of Pet-a-Palooza in an email to The Sentinel on Friday, saying the parks district was pleased to announce the event was returning to Rusch Park. The event is scheduled for March 30, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The change in venue last year drew some unfavorable responses from prior attendees, as the event had been one of the largest annual attractions in Citrus Heights. Its return had been hoped for by many, including the parks district and Mayor Jeannie Bruins.

“I’m so glad to welcome Pet-a-Palooza back to Citrus Heights,” said Bruins in an email to The Sentinel on Saturday. “It’s such a great event for pet lovers, and there are a lot of us in Citrus Heights, from young children to seniors who have pets as companions.”

Q&A: Why wasn’t Pet-a-Palooza held in Citrus Heights in 2018?

Asked about this year’s schedule for entertainment and stage performances, Buell referred questions to a spokeswoman for the event’s organizer, Bonneville International, who was unable to be reached for comment Friday. As of the parks district’s most recent meeting with organizers several weeks ago, Buell said the schedule was still being worked out.

As previously reported on The Sentinel, Pet-a-Palooza had been put on by CBS Radio up until 2017, but later that year Bonneville took over operation of four radio stations in the Sacramento area that were previously operated by CBS. In an effort to cut costs, the new owners reportedly decided to downsize Pet-a-Palooza and move it to Land Park.

    Updated April 21, 5:46 p.m.–
Wondering what’s going on in Citrus Heights this week? From community events to city council and planning commission meetings, there’s a lot going on around town.

This week’s local activities offer a variety of free options, with the annual Pet-a-Palooza event expected to draw thousands of pets and people to Rusch Park on Saturday, along with the Citrus Town Center’s family-fun Spring Celebration and Metro Fire’s CPR training at the Sunrise Mall.

Those hoping to make it to all three events may encounter some scheduling difficulties, as all of them are planned for the same day: April 25.

Pet-a-Palooza will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, while the two-hour Spring Celebration is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and the nearby CPR training offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On an event flier, Metro Fire says participants can learn how to save a life “in just 5 minutes,” so it shouldn’t be hard to squeeze in a quick trip if you’re trying to make it to multiple events.

There’s also two events this Friday, with Sacramento County Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan inviting residents to her 7:30 a.m. monthly “Community Cabinet Meeting” at the Citrus Heights Denny’s, and Gun Owners of California holding its annual crab feed at the Citrus Heights Community Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.

For those interested in local government, the Citrus Heights Planning Commission will be meeting this Wednesday at 7 p.m., and the city council will meet the following evening.

Planning commission members will hold several public hearings concerning electronic signs at Antelope Crossing, development of 23 residential lots at Sunrise Boulevard and Lawrence Avenue, and a Design Review Permit for a new Applebee’s on Auburn Boulevard. Commissioners will also be asked to approve a staff update to the City’s 5-year Capital Improvement Program.

Prior to its usual 7 p.m. meeting, City Council members will be holding a public study session at 6 p.m. on Thursday to assess a salvage plan for city hall, in light of the council’s recent approval for a new city hall and medical office building.

The council will also be asked to receive and file the City’s Quarterly Treasurer’s Report and authorize the city manager to apply for Homeless Veterans Support Program Funding. An annual report from the Sunrise Marketplace is also on the agenda, as well as consideration of a commercial lease agreement for an Auburn Boulevard property.

Thousands of dogs, and people, will again be coming to Rusch Park for what organizers are calling “Sacramento’s biggest free pet event,” filled with obstacle courses and splash areas for dogs, as well as on-site food and a “beer garden” for humans.

Sponsored by CBS Radio and the Sunrise Recreation and Park District, the 2015 event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature live music from Colbie Caillat and Katy Tiz this year.

The annual Pet-a-Palooza event also promises to be kid-friendly, with a special area for inflatable jump houses, slides, face painting and a rock wall – along with vendor areas for local pet stores, veterinarians, and rescue groups. Pets will be available for adoption as well, according to a promotional webpage for the event.

According to park district Recreation Services Manager Marty Buell, Pet-a-Palooza was first held at Rusch Park five years ago and currently draws about 7,500 to 10,000 attendees each year.

Last year’s event included a K-9 demonstration by the Citrus Heights Police Department, as well as a popular “Splash Dogs” competition which featured a 40-foot-long pool with a platform for dogs to take a flying leap.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes competed at the Splash Dogs pool jump competition in Citrus Heights, Saturday.

Although most dogs jumped right in after their owners tossed a toy into the pool, the dog in this video eagerly –but hesitantly– perched on the ledge over the water before taking the big leap.

The competition was part of the annual Pet-a-Palazoo event on April 26, 2014 at Rusch Park in Citrus Heights, California.
