Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches opened a new franchise location in Citrus Heights on Tuesday, taking up one of the remaining spots in the new shopping center at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Madison Avenue.

The restaurant chain is known for its speedy ordering and delivery, fresh-baked bread that’s made every four hours, and preservative-free meats with no artificial ingredients. Menu selections include the 8-inch “Hunter’s Club,” which features a quarter-pound of medium-rare roast beef, and a sandwich called the “J.J. Gargantuan” to feed “the hungriest of humans.”

Customer James Terry, who tried out Jimmy John’s for the first time on Tuesday, said the quick-serve experience was different from Subway where customized orders are standard practice. Although surprised he couldn’t request chopped onions and a little dill pickle on the side, he called his 8-inch tuna sandwich “outstanding” and said he’d be coming back again.

Local Franchisee Phil Hornstra, who owns the Citrus Heights location, previously told The Sentinel that Jimmy John’s focus is on “freaky fast” service — meaning customized orders aren’t always possible. However, many options are still offered and the menu features a number of “freebies” that can be added to most sandwiches, including sprouts, sliced cucumber, different mustards, and oregano.

“We typically will have your sandwich made and back to the register before you finish paying,” said Hornstra. His promise appeared to be true on opening day, as orders observed were completed within about a minute of placing the order — although employees slowed down a bit to customize an order.

While specializing in speed, Jimmy John’s also has ample indoor and outdoor seating for customers to enjoy a meal. Delivery is also an option for catering orders and even single sandwich orders, with a sample order placed on the company’s website showing a $1.50 delivery fee for a standard 8-inch sandwich order.

Hornstra’s company, “PG2H, Inc.,” also operates a Jimmy John’s franchise that opened in Roseville last December and plans to bring about a dozen more sandwich shops to the area. He said the new shopping center in Citrus Heights was chosen for a new shop due to it being “centrally located to many retail and business options.”

According to JimmyJohns.com, the sandwich company was founded in 1983 by Jimmy John Liautaud. After graduating second-to-last in his 1982 high school class and deciding “college was not for him,” Liautaud obtained a $25,000 loan from his father and opened his first sub shop in Charleston, Illinois. His company has since grown to over 2,600 locations in 43 states.

The new Jimmy John’s is located at 5410 Sunrise Blvd. in Citrus Heights, with standard operating hours of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The next closest shops are located on Del Paso Road in Sacramento and Douglas Boulevard in Roseville.

Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is planning to open a new Citrus Heights location this year, promising “freaky fast” sandwich preparation and local delivery.

Franchisee Phil Hornstra told The Sentinel via email this week that the new location is scheduled to open in mid-September, joining the recently opened Smart & Final Extra store in the new shopping center under construction at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Madison Avenue. Hornstra said his company, “PG2H, Inc.,” currently operates a Jimmy John’s franchise that opened in Roseville last December and plans to bring another 12 sandwich shops to the area.

“We are freaky fast,” said Hornstra, asked to describe Jimmy John’s for those who haven’t visited before. “We typically will have your sandwich made and back to the register before you finish paying.”

He said the restaurant chain also features fresh-baked bread all day, with veggies prepped each morning and meats and cheeses sliced daily. Menu selections include the “Hunter’s Club,” which features a quarter-pound of medium-rare roast beef, and the 8-inch “Vito,” an Italian sub with genoa salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato and Italian dressing. A sandwich called the “J.J. Gargantuan” promises to feed “the hungriest of humans.”

Hornstra said delivery options are available for catering orders as well as for “just one person want[ing] just one sandwich.” He said Jimmy John’s locations are known for last-minute catering and can prepare food for 100 people with less than an hour’s notice — although the company’s website says 24-hour notice is preferred.

Hornstra said the new shopping center in Citrus Heights was chosen for a Jimmy John’s location due to it being “centrally located to many retail and business options.” He said the company will hire about 30 to 35 staff members and will seek to be involved in local school events and fundraisers.

His company has since grown to nearly 2,500 locations nationwide.

The closest Jimmy John’s restaurants are located on Del Paso Road in Sacramento and Douglas Boulevard in Roseville.

  • New Citrus Heights shopping plaza to now open in May

The new 5.7-acre shopping center under construction at Madison Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard is now set to open in May 2016 rather than January, according to the broker group hired to lease the property.

According to broker Andrea Stirling with The Edwards Company, the plaza’s new Smart & Final Extra store is scheduled for a May opening date, with four restaurants and others soon to follow. New restaurants will include Moe’s Southwest Grill, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, Black Bear Diner, and McDonald’s, while three other available spaces are yet to be leased.

Questions about the reason for the delayed opening date were referred to Chris Bucklin of the Petaluma-based PMB Development company, who was not able to be reached by phone or email Friday afternoon.

Stirling said there’s been some interest in the remaining spots on the new Capital Nursery Plaza, but she said the center is “maxed out on food” due to parking restrictions, so future tenants will have to be “non-food.”

The layout of the plaza and its available spots are pictured in a newly published informational packet on TheEdwardsCo.com, designed to attract new tenants. The 9-page packet shows a 1,300-square-foot location available in a shared spot with Jimmy John’s, as well as a 3,100-square-foot pad along Sunrise Boulevard, and a 3,470-square-foot pad along Madison Avenue.

The new Quick Stop gas station being constructed at the corner is on a different parcel and is unaffiliated with the shopping plaza, according to Stirling.

Although construction of the new Smart & Final store is visibly taking shape, the new McDonald’s has yet to announce a date to break ground, according to a statement by company spokesperson Natalie Aronson on Friday.
As previously reported on The Sentinel, the Fair Oaks McDonald’s on the southeast corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Madison Avenue -- currently just outside Citrus Heights -- will relocate across the street to the new Citrus Heights shopping center. Aronson said that decision was made due to the current facility outgrowing its capacity over the past 20 years, and the new location featuring a larger and more modern design. [Read more: McDonald’s to relocate in new Citrus Heights shopping center] According to development plans approved by City planning commissioners last January, the new shopping center required demolition of about 18,000 square feet of existing improvements on the old Capital Nursery plant center. When complete, the site will be home to nearly 50,000 square feet of commercial buildings — along with adding an equal amount of landscaping, and 276 parking spots. [follow text="Get more news:"] Plans show the six new buildings are designed to have “complementary architectural features,” and range in size between 2,600 and 27,000 square feet, with heights between 21 and 41 feet. [Background: Citrus Heights to gain 200 jobs with proposed shopping center] A project description listed in planning commission documents says the plaza will bring over 200 permanent new jobs in Citrus Heights, with positions ranging from entry-level to franchise ownership. The Fair Oaks McDonald’s at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Madison Avenue is currently located just a few feet outside Citrus Heights city limits, but if things go as planned, the fast-food restaurant will soon be relocating across the street to the new Citrus Heights shopping center under development.

McDonald’s spokesperson Natalie Aronson said the decision was made due to the current facility outgrowing its capacity over the past 20 years, and the new location promises to feature a larger, modern design and site plan.” She said the new store will be almost 900 square feet larger than the existing facility.

McDonald’s will join Smart & Final and several other restaurants to make up the new shopping plaza under construction at the old Capital Nursery site on Sunrise Boulevard. So far, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and Black Bear Diner have been confirmed for the new plaza, according to The Edwards Company — the commercial real estate group seeking to fill the two remaining retail spots on the plaza.

Although The Edwards Group says the new plaza will be open in January 2016, Aronson said McDonald’s expects to begin construction in “the first quarter” of 2016. She said the existing location will remain open until the new store is ready to serve customers in summer 2016.
