    Local conference to highlight volunteerism, leadership

    An educational conference designed to help emerging nonprofit and community group leaders grow their organizations is scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Citrus Heights Community Center.

    The 2015 Community Leadership Conference schedule highlights benefits for volunteers aspiring to become leaders or launch a nonprofit organization, as well as for existing nonprofits seeking to “grow and flourish,” according to an event flier. Conference topics include “Fundraising 101,” e-strategy, volunteerism, and sessions covering the economic and social impacts of nonprofits.

    The all-day conference will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, with a registration cost of $25 — which includes a continental breakfast and box lunch, as well as a “tool kit” with free resources and services, according to the conference EventBrite web page.

    Sessions will be presented by speakers from organizations like United Way and the local groups like the Citrus Heights Police Activities League and Citrus Heights Water District, according to the event schedule.

    The leadership conference is hosted by the GFWC Citrus Heights Women’s Club and community leaders, and has picked up sponsorship by more than a dozen businesses, including Safe Credit Union, Stones Gambling Hall, and Raley’s.

    Citrus Heights Mayor Sue Frost has long-envisioned such a conference, telling The Sentinel in January that facilitating a community leadership event was one of her main 2015 goals as mayor. She also helped organize a regional leadership event at the Community Center in May.

    Looking for some local events in Citrus Heights? Here’s some highlights of what’s coming to town in September:

    Multi-cultural Career Expo: On Thursday, Sept. 3, the sixth annual career expo will be held at the Citrus Heights Community Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a focus on business networking and job opportunities. (Learn more)

    Citrus Heights Community Marching Band Fall Yard Sale: The marching band will hold its massive Fall yard sale again this year, at 7620 Linden Ave. in Citrus Heights. The yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 4-7, as well as Sept. 11-13, according to the band’s event web page.

    Labor Day: City offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of the holiday.

    Circus Vargas: From Sept. 10 through 14, Sunrise Mall will be home to acrobats, magicians, clowns and more, as Circus Vargas brings its entertainment to Citrus Heights. (Circus website)

    September 11 Flag Unveiling: At 4 p.m. on the 11th, City leaders will unveil and dedicate two new flagpoles at the Sylvan Ranch Community Garden. The unveiling will raise four new “Made in America” flags donated by the American Legion 637 and Boy Scout Troop 228, according to a press release from the City of Citrus Heights. The garden is located at the corner of Sylvan Road and Stock Ranch Road.

    I-80 pedestrian overcrossing workshop: A City-sponsored community meeting will be held on Sept. 16 to gain public input on the potential for a new Citrus Heights pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Interstate 80. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the Rusch Park Sunrise/Patio Room, located at 7801 Auburn Blvd. (More details)

    WaterSmart Workshop: On Sept. 19, a free water-efficient landscaping workshop will be held at the Citrus Heights Community Center, designed to help local homeowners and gardeners get “the best yard with the least water.” The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon at 6300 Fountain Square Dr. (Learn more)

    Car Show: A pre-1976 car show and vendor fair benefiting families with babies in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) will be held on Sept. 19, in the Citrus Heights Lowe’s parking lot. The event is put on by the local nonprofit group “Ending NICU Obstacles,” and will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 7840 Greenback Ln. (Event flier)

    Community Leadership Conference: On Sept. 22, an educational event will be held at the Citrus Heights Community Center to help “empower emerging nonprofit leaders to build their organizations, increase revenue, grow membership and create sustainable partnerships through volunteerism.” The event will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 6300 Fountain Square Dr., with ticket prices ranging from $25 to $50.     Wiffle Ball Tournament: A wiffle ball fundraiser to support those with Multiple Sclerosis will be held in Citrus Heights on Sept. 26. According to the event’s Facebook page, the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. at 6939 Larkspur Ave., on two private wiffle ball fields behind the organizer’s home. (Event details)

    Sunday Funday: On Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Rusch Park will again feature the City-sponsored annual Sunday Funday event, promising live music and entertainment, children’s games, climbing walls and more. (Event flier)
