An outdoor holiday event scheduled to take place at the Citrus Town Center this weekend has been cancelled due to the likelihood of rain, according to postings on the shopping center’s social media accounts Thursday morning.

The two-hour “Holiday Open House” event was set to feature free horse-drawn carriage rides, pictures with costume characters, carolers, face painting, and other activities at the Center’s shopping plaza on Greenback Lane.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience, but we wish everyone happy holidays!” the Town Center posted on its Facebook page Thursday, along with a note to “stay tuned for more exciting events coming in 2016.”

In 2012, the former “Sunrise Festival Shopping Center” finalized its nearly $4 million remodel, featuring new landscaping, store frontages, outdoor seating areas, and a prominently displayed new name at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard.

The Citrus Town Center plans to show the third film of its summer outdoor movie series on July 11, this time featuring the 2014 “Paddington” film on the center’s huge inflatable projector at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard.

Organizers say the PG-rated animated film will begin at dusk, and attendees can enjoy some pre-movie music and entertainment — along with free popcorn and raffle entry for some town center merchant prizes. A framed Polaroid picture with the event and date is also promised as a free gift for those who show up early, according to the town center’s web page.

As seating is on cement, attendees are asked to bring their own chairs rather than blankets, and organizers ask for large coolers, glass containers, and alcohol to stay home. Strollers are allowed and handicap seating is available, according to the town center.

The outdoor movie series is one of many activities the Citrus Town Center sponsors throughout the year, as part of its goal to foster a “community feel” for the neighborhood shopping center. In 2012, the former “Sunrise Festival Shopping Center” finalized its nearly $4 million remodel, featuring new landscaping, store frontages, outdoor seating areas, and a prominently displayed new name at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Avenue.

A final outdoor showing in the Center’s summer series has been planned for the night of August 8, according to www.citrustowncenter.com.

Half Price Books to open new Citrus Heights store on June 25

Half Price Books plans to open its first Sacramento-region location this summer in Citrus Heights.

    Updated Apr. 3, 7:50 a.m.
Citrus Heights will be getting a new bookstore on Greenback Lane this summer, with Half Price Books planning to open its first Sacramento-region store in the Citrus Town Center.

“We’ve long heard from our customers and fans there was a need for a Half Price Books in the Sacramento area,” said the company’s California District Manager Matt Dalton in an email interview with The Sentinel this week. His comments were also reflected by Citrus Heights Mayor Sue Frost, who said she expects the bookstore to be a popular spot in a city that “loves to read.”

With its first store opening in 1972, the new-and-used bookstore brand has expanded locations to 16 states, promising almost everything at “half the publisher’s price or less,” according to the company’s website.

Despite the bankruptcy of bookstores like Borders in the digital age, Half Price Books is bucking the trend and opening new stores in Texas and Ohio this year as well, according to Dalton.

“Because of our selection and prices, we’ve been able to remain profitable in the digital age,” said Dalton, answering the “is-print-dead” question asked by some in today’s iPad and Nook generation. He said along with new bestsellers, Half Price Books carries “thousands of titles not found in digital formats, out-of-print items, and one-of-a-kinds.”

Although currently empty inside, the 7975 Greenback Lane location already advertises the anticipated summer opening, along with window signs announcing a $500 “Win Books For a Year” promotion. According to company spokesperson Emily Bruce, the gift card giveaway was launched in celebration of the new Citrus Heights store.

The new 8,268 square feet store will be the bookstore chain’s fifth location in California, with the closest stores being in Berkeley and Concord, according to a list posted on the company’s website.

Dalton said his team is currently collecting books for the store’s inventory, with the bulk of construction set to begin when the company takes possession of the property in mid-May.

An inflatable big-screen projector will be set up behind Dress Barn in Citrus Heights Saturday night, as the Citrus Town Center hosts a showing of “The Nut Job” cartoon — the final film to be shown during its summer “Outdoor Movie Series” this year.

“Bring the family and enjoy a Citrus Heights night under the stars,” reads a flier for the event, which also highlights free popcorn, raffle prizes and music will be supplied at the family-friendly event.

The PG-rated film features the voices of Brendan Fraser, Liam Neeson and Katherine Heigal, and opened in January of this year, enjoying a moderate turn-out by audiences around the country before being released on video several months ago.

The final of five outdoor films shown this year, the 85-minute movie is scheduled to begin around 8:20 p.m., depending on when it gets dark, but organizers say people usually start arriving around 7:30 p.m. to enjoy some “pre-movie entertainment” and save a seat.

Although plastic chairs will be provided, organizers welcome attendees to bring their own chairs, small coolers and drinks — as long as there’s no glass or alcohol. They also recommend bringing a blanket if planning to sit on the ground, as the venue is on cement.

The “Outdoor Movie Series” is one of many activities the Citrus Town Center sponsors throughout the year, as part of its goal to foster a “community feel” for the neighborhood shopping center. In 2012, the former “Sunrise Festival Shopping Center” finalized its nearly $4 million remodel, featuring new landscaping, store frontages, outdoor seating areas, and a prominently displayed new name at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Avenue.

Local Labor Day Weekend Fair Highlights Safety, Fun

With giveaways, local vendors, fire truck photo-shoots and free safety checks, the Citrus Town Center hosted a Safety Fair on Saturday — drawing kids, families and shoppers to the annual Citrus Heights event.

    Safety Fair_Police_cropped
Strollers, balloons, moms and more, were out and about at the Citrus Town Center’s Safety Fair over the weekend.

Odds of winning an 11 a.m. raffle by the fire department for free home safety equipment were high, due to only a handful of entries — but things had picked up by the second noon-hour raffle, according to the Department’s booth manager.

Area resident Kristin Pickett waited in a line of cars to get a free child seat safety check performed by the Citrus Heights Police Department.

“It was wonderful,” said the young mother, after Officer Dave Jones took several minutes to verify her child’s car seat base was securely fit and the straps tight. “It was great of them to be giving up their Saturday on this extremely hot day.”

Free bike safety checks were also offered by police, with officers available to provide brake checks and chain adjustments, as well as helmet and seat adjustments.

“There’s still too many kids that ride their bikes without their helmets,” said Sergeant David Gutierrez with the CHPD Traffic Unit, adding that half-way through the event they had been able to provide a few free helmets and fittings.

Handing out free Quick Quack car wash vouchers, Chaplain Frank Russell with Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Sacramento manned a table hoping to recruit new volunteers for his organization which offers “compassionate crisis care” and counseling for law enforcement workers and community victims of trauma or crime.

In addition, Sunrise Marketplace, Sprout’s and several other local businesses took part in the event, along with a cartoonist who offered free caricature drawings to a constant line of excited attendees.

Saturday’s Fair was one of many activities the Citrus Town Center sponsors throughout the year, as part of its goal to foster a “community feel” for the neighborhood shopping center.
