Fire crews responded to three ‘suspicious’ fires in Citrus Heights around 6 p.m. Wednesday, all occurring in field areas near Costco and Walmart on Auburn Boulevard.

Metro Fire Battalion Chief Mark Repetto said crews extinguished two separate grass fires located about 100 yards apart and 400 feet behind Costco. He said the two fires were located on homeless camps, while a third debris fire near Walmart involved “homeless paraphernalia.”

“If it’s one [fire], I would say someone’s trying to cook and they start a fire,” the battalion chief said. “But when there’s three like that, that’s suspicious, not accidental.”

Repetto said an arson investigator was scheduled to assess the scene more thoroughly on Thursday and would also review video surveillance. He said the investigator could not respond to the scene Wednesday due to several other grass fires occurring in Sacramento County the same day, at least one of which involved an arson investigation.

A total of four engines assisted in extinguishing the fires around Costco and Walmart. Firefighters had to “hike in” to access the fires, using several hundred feet of hose extensions to reach the locations.

The fires were all kept under “50 by 100” in size and were extinguished in about 10 minutes, according to Repetto.

Update: Phone messages left on Saturday regarding an update on the fire investigation were not immediately returned by Metro Fire’s Public Information Office.

An early morning fire at a Citrus Heights office on Greenback Lane Monday was later ruled arson, according to Metro Fire officials.

The blaze occurred around 1 a.m. on the 7400 block of Greenback Lane, with firefighters containing the blaze to a single office space and approximately $35,000 in damages. Metro Fire initially tweeted via its official Twitter account that the incident appeared “suspicious,” followed by a Tweet several hours later declaring the fire to have been arson.

Photos released by Metro Fire appear to show fire damage to walls, dangling and burned ceiling portions, and a broken front window.

Nearby business owners said the office space was vacant, but was scheduled to have a tattoo parlor open up shop soon, according to a Fox40 news report. Owners of the office were unable to be reached by The Sentinel on Monday.

The fire is believed to have been the first arson of the year in Citrus Heights, with police recently reporting that arson had dropped by 25 percent in 2015. According to statistics released by the Citrus Heights Police Department last week, there were six arsons in 2015, compared to eight in 2014.

    Updated Dec. 10, 5:06 p.m.–
Sirens and flames lit up the night in Citrus Heights just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, as a blaze quickly destroyed a shed and threatened a home on Evening Way near Rollingwood Boulevard.

Fire crews dispatched to the 7400 block of Evening Way reported finding a “well-involved” shed fire upon arrival, with firefighters extinguishing the flames by 10:20 p.m., according to a tweet from Metro Fire.

Fire Captain Michele Eidam said the shed was “completely destroyed” by the blaze, but did not have a damage estimate available. She said crews were able to contain the fire to the shed, and reported no injuries or damage to the nearby home.

Eidam said the cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature.

Another fire in Citrus Heights last Wednesday took the life of 89-year-old Mona Nash, who was found in her bedroom after an early morning blaze ripped through her two story home on Sunrise Boulevard near Oak Avenue. Eidam said the cause of that fire was “technically undetermined,” but originated near a furnace.

Following last week’s deadly blaze, Metro Fire published a news release advising residents to test smoke alarms, use flameless candles when possible, keep space heaters at least three feet from combustible items, and to dispose fireplace ashes in metal containers.
