    Sentinel staff report–
The long-awaited opening of Chando’s Tacos in Citrus Heights has arrived, with diners seen seated inside the new Sylvan Corners location on Friday, along with “we’re open” signage visible outside.

A post on the restaurant’s Facebook page says the location is currently hiring all positions, with applications accepted on site at 7084 Auburn Blvd.

The location, which shares a shopping center with Starbucks, Little Caesar’s, and Haya Sushi, has been on tap for opening since 2018, but experienced continued delays.

Owner Lisandro “Chando” Madrigal, explaining initial delays in plans for opening in 2018, told The Sentinel: “There’s just not enough hours in the day for everything that I want to do.”

Chando’s Tacos is known for its popular food trucks in the Sacramento area, along with its growing number of sit-down restaurants. Citrus Heights is the sixth location.

Chando’s menu includes a full-range of Mexican favorites, including tacos, tostadas, quesadillas, flautas, nachos and Chando’s Papas: hand-cut, potato fries topped with a choice of meat, nacho cheese sauce, onion, cilantro, guacamole, crema, pico de gallo, and salsa.

Hours for the new location are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • New Chando’s Tacos in Citrus Heights to finally open this summer, owner says

    By Thomas J. Sullivan–
Despite numerous delays, owner Lisandro “Chando” Madrigal of Chando’s Tacos says he is finally looking forward to a grand opening date this summer for his latest restaurant at Sylvan Corners in Citrus Heights.

“It’s taken quite a bit longer than I thought, but our general contractor is on schedule, and the last building permit issues have been resolved,” Madrigal said in an interview with The Sentinel this week. “Our exterior signage is now up, and we look forward to welcoming new customers in Citrus Heights very soon.”

His new Citrus Heights restaurant is located in a high-traffic strip center at 7084 Auburn Blvd. The shopping center was built in 2007, and current co-tenants in the plaza include Starbucks, Haya Sushi and Little Caesar’s Pizza.

“It’s a great location, and once we’re open, we should do well,” he said.

Madrigal owns two Chando’s Tacos in Sacramento, another in West Sacramento, and a fourth location in Roseville.

The restaurant’s overall menu will be generally the same as its other current locations, Madrigal said.

Interior rough plumbing is nearing completion at the Citrus Heights location. “Once that’s done, our general contractor anticipates that the build-out will be quick,” he said. “He’s on schedule at this time.”

“Everything else is in place. We’ll still need to clear the necessary health and final inspections which have to take place before we’re officially cleared to open,” he said.

Chando’s Tacos is well known for its mini-torta Mexican-style sandwiches, and mulitas made by layering jack cheese and a choice of Chando’s signature meats between two corn tortillas.

The menu will include a full-range of Mexican favorites including tacos, tostadas, quesadillas, flautas, nachos and of course, Chando’s Papas, fresh hand-cut, potato fries topped with your choice of Chando’s signature meats, nacho cheese sauce, onion, cilantro, guacamole, crema, pico de gallo, and salsa.

“I’m excited to bring our new restaurant to Citrus Heights,” Madrigal said.

Looking for some food truck flavor in Citrus Heights? Every second Wednesday through September, Food Truck Mania is on schedule to take over part of Rusch Park with a diverse selection of mobile street food offerings.

The monthly event is hosted by SactoMoFo, a group organizing food truck events in the region, and the Sunrise Recreation and Park District. The local event series kicked off last summer at Rusch Park and is continuing this year as well, with food and music on tap each time from 5 to 8 p.m.

Each event features a different truck lineup, with June’s food array featuring Chandos Tacos, Cluck n’ Chuck, Costa’s Finest Kettle Corn, Drewski’s, Flavor Face, Local Kine Shave Ice, Rollin’ Roadhouse and Rudy’s on the Roll, according to SactoMoFo’s Facebook page.

The food truck advocacy group holds similar events each year in the greater-Sacramento region, including monthly “mania” events in downtown Roseville, Vacaville and Loomis. The group was founded in 2011 with a mission “to build acceptance of street food as a viable business model and an appropriate incubator for would-be restaurateurs and other businesspeople.”

Future food truck events at Rusch Park in 2016 are scheduled for the evenings of June 8, July 13, Aug. 10 and Sept. 14.
