Sentinel staff report–
Promising an evening of craft beer tastings, live music, food trucks and backyard games, the Sunrise MarketPlace on Thursday announced its “Brews in the Burbs” event will return to the Sunrise Mall parking lot in May this year.
The event was first held in 2019 and intended to become an annual happening, but those plans were put on hold due to the pandemic beginning the following year. The 2022 event is slated for Saturday, May 21, from 5-8 p.m., with admission one hour early for VIP ticket holders.
Tickets run $45 for general admission, and $70 for VIP tickets. A special “designated driver” ticket is also available for $25, for those not consuming alcohol. Tickets include unlimited beer tastings with a souvenir 4-ounce mug.
According to Sunrise MarketPlace’s website, vendors confirmed to be on site this year include At Ease Brewing Company, along with Jackrabbit, River City and Strad Meadery, Darkheart, and Big Sexy Brewing Company. Live music will be provided by the Sacramento-based cover band Thunder Cover.
Sentinel staff report–
Early bird general admission tickets are already sold out for the first-ever “Brews in the Burbs” festival in Citrus Heights, but several other ticket options still remain for those interested.
The event is put on by the Sunrise MarketPlace and will take place on Saturday, June 8, from 4-8 p.m. in the Sunrise Mall parking lot. The inaugural event promises craft beer tastings, live music, food trucks, games and more.
Ticket prices range from $35 for a “not so early bird” general admission ticket, to $50 for a VIP admission ticket. All tickets — except for a $20 “designated driver” ticket — include unlimited beer tasting.
The VIP ticket offers early entry, a larger tasting glass, and access to a VIP lounge, according to ticket descriptions on EventBrite. Early entry will begin at 4 p.m., while general admission ticket holders will have access from 5-8 p.m.
Setup and security for the beer festival will be similar to that of past outdoor concerts at Sunrise Marketplace. The “Brews in the Burbs” festival will be held in partnership with Beers in Sac, a beer festival scheduling company in Sacramento.
Participating breweries announced so far on the event’s official Facebook page include Sacramento’s River City Brewing Company and Humboldt County’s Mad River Brewing Company, as well as BoochCraft, Jackrabbit Brewing Company, and other breweries.
Sunrise MarketPlace representative Julie DePrada previously told The Sentinel that organizers are hopeful the event will become “an annual event people will want to keep coming back to.” The event is the first of several events the MarketPlace has announced as part of its 20-year anniversary.
The Sunrise MarketPlace was formed in 1999 as a business improvement district that represents more than 400 businesses in the commercial corridor near Sunrise Mall. Recent events included a Holiday Laser Light Show in the parking lot at Lowe’s, performances of the Nutcracker Ballet inside Sunrise Mall and a “Winterfest” event at Sunrise Village.
Tickets for Brews in the Burbs can be purchased online at EventBrite.com. Entry is restricted to those age 21 and over.

Updated Jan. 28, 6:04 a.m.– By Thomas J. Sullivan– The Sunrise Mall parking lot at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Greenback Lane will be transformed into an outdoor beer festival this summer, with Sunrise MarketPlace’s inaugural “Brews in the Burbs” event.
The festival is slated to take place on Saturday, June 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. and is one of the first significant public events celebrating the 20th anniversary of Sunrise MarketPlace, a business improvement district made up of more than 400 businesses in the commercial corridor near Sunrise Mall. News of the upcoming festival is already posted on the Sunrise MarketPlace Facebook page although a formal public announcement hasn’t yet been made, said MarketPlace spokesperson Julie DePrada.
DePrada said plans call for the parking lot to be turned into a backyard hangout to showcase craft breweries in the Northern California area. The event will feature craft beer tastings, live music, food trucks and backyard games.
Setup and security for the beer festival will be similar to that of past outdoor concerts at Sunrise Marketplace. The “Brews in the Burbs” festival will be held in partnership with Beers in Sac, a beer festival scheduling company in Sacramento.
Brews in the Burbs will be a 21-and-over event, DePrada said. Tickets will go on sale to the public in early February, at a price to be finalized shortly. Proceeds from the event will go to the Citrus Heights Rotary Club.
“I’m excited to see the public response to this festival. We’re hoping it will be an annual event people will want to keep coming back to,” she said.
The Sunrise MarketPlace also holds a popular holiday season “Magical Moments” event series, which began in 2017. Recent events included a Holiday Laser Light Show in the parking lot at Lowe’s, a Nutcracker Ballet performance inside Sunrise Mall and a “Winterfest” event at Sunrise Village.
