Citrus Heights police said a 26-year-old was arrested after he crashed his vehicle into a power pole on Antelope Road late Tuesday and then tried to flee the scene. The collision resulted in thousands of homes in the area temporarily losing power for up to three hours.

In an email statement to The Sentinel late Wednesday, Officer Wesley Herman said police responded to a reported solo-vehicle collision with a power pole on the 7000 block of Antelope Road around 11:30 p.m., with responding officers finding the driver of the vehicle “fleeing from the scene of the accident.”

Herman said the driver was “actively defiant with officers during their instructions, but was eventually detained.”

The driver, identified by police as Andrew Tolbert of Sacramento, was subsequently arrested for DUI, hit-and-run collision, “resisting/delaying/obstructing a public officer,” and violating probation, according to Officer Herman. Police said Tolbert was on probation for domestic battery, resisting arrest, burglary, and several other offenses.

After police said he was “medically cleared,” Tolbert was taken to the Sacramento County main jail. Herman said the driver “sustained minor superficial wounds during the time he was resisting arrest.”

According to SMUD’s online outage map, more than 16,000 customers in the Citrus Heights area lost power at 11:33 p.m. on Tuesday, apparently from the collision. A SMUD truck arrived shortly after midnight and could be seen shining a light on the pole, which was leaning over towards Antelope Road, although still mostly upright.

Residents on Mariposa Avenue and some other areas reported having their power restored by around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, and most others had power back on by 2:30 a.m., according to SMUD’s website.

  • Work begins on new Antelope Rd stoplight project

Construction has begun on a new stoplight at the intersection of Amsterdam Avenue and Antelope Road in Citrus Heights.

Construction began last week on a project to signalize the intersection of Antelope Road at Amsterdam avenue and Rosswood Drive in Citrus Heights, with City officials anticipating the project to be completed in the next five weeks.

During construction, Amsterdam Avenue and Rosswood Drive will be open for traffic, but Antelope Road is currently limited to one lane in each direction between about 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., according to City Construction Inspector Randy Keen.

Keen said the project includes new sidewalks, stoplight poles, crosswalks, handicap ramps and several new LED street lights. He said the project was a condition included in the approval of the AutumnWood housing development in order to accommodate the increased traffic on Amsterdam Avenue coming from the 46 new homes.

Amsterdam Avenue resident Carolyn Martinez told The Sentinel that traffic has already increased in the area from construction workers and interested buyers using Amsterdam as the main entrance for the new AutumnWood development.

“I’m very glad that they’re gonna [construct a new stoplight],” said Martinez, commenting she has a hard time making left turns onto Antelope Road. “It’s necessary because I can’t even get out of my driveway sometimes.”

Keen said the location of the new stoplight is called an “offset intersection,” as it will signalize both Rosswood Drive and Amsterdam Avenue. He said it will be similar to the intersection on Auburn Boulevard at Kanai Avenue and Carlton Lane, which is also offset.

The total cost of the project will run about $550,000, according to City Management Analyst Regina Cave, while the recently completed stoplight project on Sunrise Boulevard and Sungarden Drive cost around $2 million.

  • Antelope Road to get new $550,000 stoplight this summer

    Citrus Heights, Amsterdam Avenue, AutumnWood,
The City of Citrus Heights will install a new signal light at the intersection of Amsterdam Avenue and Antelope Road this summer.

Citrus Heights drivers will soon notice a new light singal at the intersection of Antelope Road and Amsterdam Avenue this summer, located near the “pink house” and historic Rusch Home.

Amsterdam Avenue resident Carolyn Martinez says traffic has already increased in the area from construction workers and interested buyers using Amsterdam as a main entrance for the new 46-home AutumnWood development.

“I’m very glad that they’re gonna [construct a new stoplight],” said Martinez, commenting she has a hard time making left turns onto Antelope Road. “It’s necessary because I can’t even get out of my driveway sometimes.”

City Management Analyst Regina Cave said a date hasn’t been set yet for when the project will begin, but said she hopes construction will start by the end of July or early August. She said traffic signal poles have been ordered, but won’t be delivered until July — and work won’t begin until all the equipment needed is received.

The total cost of the project will run about $550,000, according to Cave, and will take around two months to complete, once work starts.
