    Citrus Heights This Week: what’s happening in town (Oct.5-10)

    Local events happening around Citrus Heights this week include a chili cook-off and car show, a city council meeting, and a football game between Mesa Verde and San Juan high school teams. Here’s what the week looks like:

    TUESDAY, Oct. 6 —
    Teen Writers Workshop.
    Another free workshop will be held at Sylvan Oaks Library, designed to help those aged 13-19 discover different writing styles and formats, with the assistance of a community college instructor. Workshops will be held each Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sept. 8 through Nov. 24. The library is located at the corner of Auburn Boulevard and Van Maren Lane. (Registration link)

    THURSDAY, Oct. 8 —
    City Council meeting:
    Beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Citrus Heights Community Center, the council will hold a special study session for discussion and direction on the Mitchell Special Planning Area. A regular council meeting will follow at 7 p.m., where City leaders are set to officially recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Council will also hold a first reading for a proposed ordinance related to expediting the permit process for small residential rooftop solar systems and consider approving a $10,000 sponsorship to the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce.

    FRIDAY, Oct. 9 —
    High School Football Game:
    Two Citrus Heights high school teams will face eachother on Friday night, with Mesa Verde Mavericks and San Juan Spartans scheduled to play a 7 p.m. game at San Juan High School. (See Spartans 2015 schedule)

    SATURDAY, Oct. 10 —
    Free Kids “Build & Grow” Clinic: The Citrus Heights Lowe’s is inviting parents to bring their kids to a free event on Saturday where they’ll build a “spooky haunted birdhouse” and get a free apron and goggles. The activity will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is recommended for kids over age 5. (Registration link)

    Chili Cook-Off: The 5th annual Chili Cook-Off and car show fundraiser will be held in the Citrus Heights Lowe’s parking lot near the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard. The event is hosted by the GFCW Citrus Heights Women’s Club, which says profits will benefit Children’s Christmas for Domestic Violence Prevention Centers, according to an event flier. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. (See flier)

    Citrus Heights This Week: what’s happening around town (July 12-18)

    Signs_city_20150110_151012Events this week in Citrus Heights include the mayor’s annual “State of the City” address, several California Dream tennis team matches, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new city hall, and more.

    Monday: Kicking off the week, city hall will open its temporary offices at 7927 Auburn Blvd. beginning Monday morning and continuing for the next year, as a new city hall is constructed on Fountain Square Drive.

    The California Dream tennis team will also play its first of seven home matches in Citrus Heights this season against the Springfield Lasers. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in the temporarily constructed Dream Stadium, located in the Sunrise Mall parking lot. Home matches will also be on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday this week. (Click for schedule and tickets.)

    Tuesday: Citrus Heights Mayor Sue Frost will deliver the annual “State of the City” address on Tuesday at the North Ridge Country Club on Madison Avenue, during a noon-hour luncheon hosted by the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce. Members of the Chamber can purchase tickets to the luncheon online for $25, while the non-member fee is $30.

    Also on Tuesday, the Citrus Heights-based “SCORE” chapter is offering a free class called “How to develop an idea into a business.” The class is open to anyone who signs up online, and will be held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Small Business Administration building at 6501 Sylvan Rd.

    Wednesday: The City of Citrus Heights will be kicking off construction of its new $22 million city hall building with a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new location next to the Post Office on Fountain Square Drive. The one-hour Wednesday ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at 6360 Fountain Square Dr.

    Friday: California Dream tickets will be offered to residents at half-off for “Citrus Heights Night,” where community members will also be involved in halftime entertainment and will have a chance to win prizes from local businesses, according to CaliforniaDreamTennis.com. The discounted tickets can be purchased in advance using the code CITRUSHEIGHTS on the team’s web page.

    Saturday: The City will be hosting an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Community Cash and Carry” day at the soon-to-be-demolished Citrus Heights city hall — selling off roses, shrubs, trees, and potted plants; as well as statues, fountains, planters and benches. Prices will range from $5 for a rose bush, to $30 for fountains over four feet in height. (Click for more.)

    Citrus Heights This Week: what’s happening around town (July 6-12)

    Signs_city_20150110_151012Events highlights in Citrus Heights this week include the annual Community Camp Out in Rusch Park, a free outdoor movie showing of Paddington, and free train rides and a kids camp at the Citrus Town Center, among other events.

    From Monday through Friday this week, city hall will operate out of the Fountain Square Drive Community Center while city offices are moving to a temporary location at 7927 Auburn Blvd. The move will allow for demolition of the old hall buildings in preparation for construction of a new medical office building at the corner of Greenback Lane and Fountain Square Drive.

    Wednesday: A swarm of food trucks will once again descend on Rusch Park from 5 to 9 p.m., as part of a new 2015 Food Truck Mania summer event series at the park. Continuing through August, the wide array of food trucks will be out in the park on the second Wednesday of each month.

    Thursday: The Citrus Heights city council will meet at its temporary location in the Community Center at 7 p.m. this Thursday. According to the meeting agenda, council members will consider approving several 2015-16 fiscal year amendments and updates relating to executive competition, payrate, and police benefits. Council members will also hear several other items, including an amendment to the City’s cardroom ordinance and a public hearing related to delinquent solid waste service charges.

    Friday: A free “Summer Safari” kid’s camp will be held at the Citrus Town Center from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with rainforest-themed activities and free train rides around the shopping plaza afterwards until 2 p.m. Two other camps are also planned for July and August. (Click for camp schedule)

    The weekend: The Citrus Town Center will also be hosting a free outdoor movie showing of the kids film “Paddington,” beginning at dusk on Saturday. The film is part of a summer outdoor movie series put on by the Town Center, with different films featured each month — all shown on a large inflatable projector screen at the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard on the Town Center plaza.

    On Saturday and Sunday, residents are invited to grab a tent and camp out with the community at Rusch Park.  The overnight Community Camp Out began in 2001, and organizers call it “one of the best family events that the City sponsors.” (Click for additional info and registration form)
