COVID Q&A: Can non-family members sit together at local restaurants?

Sentinel staff report–
As restaurants begin to reopen for dine-in eating, questions still remain as to what restrictions are in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

One policy that had been floated early on was restricting dine-in eating at restaurants to only members of the same family or household, causing some to question whether that restriction is now in place.

So what’s the policy for restaurants in Sacramento County and Citrus Heights?

While a May 4 Health Order for nearby Yuba and Sutter counties specifically restricted dine-in eating to “only household members per table,” Sacramento County’s Health Order does not have a similar restriction for dine-in eating.

Asked about dine-in restrictions in Citrus Heights, city spokeswoman Nichole Baxter referred to guidelines for restaurants posted on the state website, covid19.ca.gov.

The closest reference in those guidelines for who can be seated at a table specifies only that: “People in the same party seated at the same table do not have to be six feet apart. All members of the party must be present before seating and hosts must bring the entire party to the table at one time.”

Matt Hedges, a spokesman for Sacramento County Supervisor Sue Frost’s Office, confirmed with The Sentinel on Friday that “tables are for anyone,” and are not restricted to only members of the same household.

Other restrictions for restaurants apply for all restaurants in Sacramento County, including requirements for sanitation and other mitigation efforts to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
