Sentinel staff report–
Drivers traveling on Interstate 80 through Citrus Heights can see construction work underway on a large expansion project at Calvary Catholic Cemetery & Funeral Center.
The 21,000-square-foot funeral center project broke ground in April last year, with estimates at the time expecting the project to take 14 to 16 months to complete. The finished facility will include administrative offices, a chapel, and a reception area for celebration of life events.
As previously reported, Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services President Jerry Del Core told The Sentinel that an increase in deaths due to COVID-19 helped put the plan for the new funeral center into action last year. He said the cemetery had seen an increase of about 20% during the pandemic.
Del Core also estimated the new facility will double the size of the staff currently employed at Calvary Funeral Center.

Calvary Funeral Center currently operates four funeral centers and 11 cemeteries, with the Citrus Heights cemetery being its second-largest, located at 7101 Verner Ave. Although primarily serving Catholic and Christian communities, the cemetery offers full mortuary and cremation services for those of all faiths.
