By Mike Hazlip— A Citrus Heights family is receiving aid from a local nonprofit after their apartment was heavily damaged by a fire last month.
Citrus Heights Homeless Assistance Resource Team (HART) reached out to the family after an April 13 fire near Sunrise Mall. HART Treasurer and Executive Director of Sunrise Marketplace Kathilynn Carpenter told The Sentinel the family received money from the Red Cross for a hotel immediately after the incident. HART has provided additional funds for the hotel room, Carpenter said.
The family is also receiving assistance from The Underground clothing store, according to Carpenter. The clothing store is run by volunteers and provides clothes for families in the San Juan Unified School District at no cost to the families.
The Citrus Heights Navigator Gabby Yost is also assisting the family to move them to a duplex, Carpenter said. Yost did not respond to a phone message left last week.
The family’s identity has not released to protect their privacy and safety. Homes damaged by fire can be targeted by looters.
HART is a local nonprofit known for its efforts to prevent and end homelessness by working with at-risk individuals and families. The organization partners with local government, business owners and faith-based organizations, and regularly hold events throughout the year.
