Citrus Heights’ annual tree lighting event drew hundreds of attendees on Wednesday night, despite a rain storm that moved through the area just as the event was set to begin.
Residents and community leaders came together at City Hall where the city provided hot cocoa and cookies, train rides and children’s activities. Mayor Tim Schaefer joined City Manager Ash Feeney in welcoming attendees to the event, which also featured live holiday music from the Citrus Heights Marching Band.
“In spite of the rain, here we are,” Schaefer said. “A great festivity, awesome, great turnout. Merry Christmas.”
Steven Hembree of Antelope attended with his family, saying it was the first time they had been to the event. Hembree brought the youngest two of his five children, he said.
Families stood in long lines for train rides and visits with Santa. City staff moved several events indoors, transforming the council chambers with projections of a fireplace to greet children as they waited for photos with Santa. Artificial snow was also blown outside.
“It’s been fantastic,” Hembree said. “It’s nice to be out there singing with everybody. I’ll come back next year for sure.”
