Woman killed in Citrus Heights shooting identified by coroner

By Mike Hazlip—
Authorities have released the identity of the woman killed in an Aug. 26 shooting at a Citrus Heights apartment complex.

The shooting claimed the life of 30-year-old Jessica Joanna Medrano, Sacramento County Coroner records show. Medrano’s boyfriend, 31-year-old Andres Garcia Mendoza, sustained what police said was “life-threatening injuries,” according to an Aug. 27 press release. An updated status on his condition has not been released by police.

Arrest records show Mendoza was arrested on a homicide charge.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Dulce Medrano with a goal of raising $20,000. The page describes Jessica Medrano as a mother, daughter, sister, and friend.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we inform you of the tragic and unexpected death of our dear and beloved Jessica Medrano,” she said.

Medrano leaves behind three children, according to the statement. As of Aug. 31, the page shows a total of $10,800 had been raised.

As previously reported, police officers responded to the 6200 block of Burich Avenue near Greenback Lane at about 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 after receiving a report of gunshots. Medrano was pronounced deceased at the scene while Mendoza was taken to an area hospital.

Police encourage anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department Crime Tip Line at 916-727-5524, or the Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP (4357) to submit an anonymous tip.
