Woman killed in shooting at Citrus Heights apartments; boyfriend arrested

By Mike Hazlip—
A shooting at a Citrus Heights apartment complex over the weekend left one woman dead and her boyfriend hospitalized.

The Aug. 26 shooting occurred at about 9:30 p.m. when officers arrived to the 6200 block of Burich Avenue near Greenback Lane, according to a press release from police on Sunday.

Officers found an adult woman inside an apartment with gunshot wound injuries. An adult man was also found inside the apartment with “life-threatening injuries,” the release said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was transported to a nearby hospital where he is being treated.

Police logs show officers responded to the Greenback Gardens Apartments and made an arrest for homicide.

The woman’s identity is not being released pending notification of next of kin, police said. Arrest logs identify the man arrested as 31-year-old Andres Garcia Mendoza.

An investigation by Citrus Heights Police detectives found the shooting appears to be between the two adults who were in a dating relationship.

Police encourage anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department Crime Tip Line at 916-727-5524, or the Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP (4357) to submit an anonymous tip. Tips leading to an arrest may earn a cash reward, police said.

Saturday’s incident is the third known fatal shooting this year in Citrus Heights, with two prior shootings on Sayonara Drive. Arrests have been made in all three incidents.
