A newly constructed funeral facility along Interstate 80 in Citrus Heights was dedicated during a ceremony at the site on Wednesday.
Bishop Jamie Soto joined Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services Executive Director Jerry Del Core along with other clergy and executives to formally dedicate the new facility at Calvary Cemetery during the March 22 event. Del Core thanked the city of Citrus Heights for helping the project see completion.
In an interview with The Sentinel during the event, Director of Parish and Community Outreach for Catholic Funeral and Cemetery services Sherrie Vaughan said delays related to the weather and COVID pushed the completion date back.
She said electrical work on the project had to wait while PG&E crews worked on more urgent repairs from storm damage at the beginning of 2023. Vaughan, herself a Citrus Heights resident since 1995, said she is proud of the city and is looking forward to serving the community.
“It’s really exciting,” Vaughn said. “I think a lot of people have driven down for a long time and seen the building being built and everybody’s like, what is that?”
“So as a resident, being able to work in the city, I just really feel I’m very passionate about my city of Citrus Heights. I’m excited that I can actually serve the families and the communities here in Citrus Heights, as well as surrounding areas of course.”
A ground-breaking ceremony was held in April 2021, with a modification to the original plans being approved last August, according to a prior Sentinel article.
Calvary Cemetery was originally established in 1953, with its 53-acre site accessible off Verner Avenue.
