Homeless advocacy event at City Hall sees small showing
An event outside City Hall on Wednesday organized by homeless advocate Alfred Sanchez to raise awareness to issues faced by those experiencing homelessness was attended by just four people. The event was held on Sept. 14 to commemorate a 2018 decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, known as Martin v. Boise, where the court ruled that preventing individuals from sleeping in public when there is no alternative shelter violates the Eighth Amendment prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment.
Report of argument draws heavy police response near Holy Family Catholic Church
Four police SUV’s were observed partially blocking the roadway on Old Auburn Road on Wednesday night around 8 p.m., as officers responded to a report of a man and woman involved in an argument. Officers could be seen with flashlights talking with two individuals outside the Holy Family Community Center. Police Sgt. Joseph Aguilar said in an email Friday that no crime was committed and no arrests were made. He also confirmed there were no reports of weapons involved.
Obituary: Father Thomas J. Maguire
Father Thomas J. Maguire, a longtime priest of the Diocese of Sacramento and resident of Citrus Heights, passed away on Aug. 31 at age 79. According to an obituary published Sunday in The Sacramento Bee, Maguire had lived at a priests’ retirement village in Citrus Heights since 2017. A vigil will be held on Sept. 25 at Calvary Cemetery at 7101 Verner Ave., followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. on Sept. 26 at St. Robert Church in Sacramento. (See full obituary)
