Sentinel staff report– Citrus Heights police said a man in his 30s was fatally shot by an officer Thursday night after the man reportedly pointed a handgun at officers near a Carl’s Jr. restaurant on Antelope Road.
In a news release issued early Friday morning, police said a 911 call had been received from an unnamed business around 8:55 p.m. on Jan. 13 regarding “an intoxicated subject armed and brandishing a firearm” in the area of Antelope Road and Tupelo Drive.
Responding officers “verbally engaged him and attempted to deescalate the incident; however, the subject pointed the gun at the officers,” Police Lt. Jason Baldwin said in the news release. One officer then shot and struck the suspect, who was subsequently pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Officers could be heard on a police scanner waiting for several minutes to approach the man after he was shot, keeping a distance for safety. Police said once the suspect was disarmed, officers rendered medical aid. Scanner radio traffic also indicated the nearby Carl’s Jr. restaurant had been told shelter-in-place during the incident.
As of Friday, the identity of the deceased man had not yet been released, pending notification of family by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. Police described the man only as “a white male adult in his 30’s.”
Detectives were still on scene early Friday morning conducting an investigation. Antelope Road and Tupelo Drive were closed by police during the incident and subsequent investigation, but reopened later Friday morning.
Any witnesses or those with information related to the incident are asked to call (916) 727-5524.
