There are three fewer vacant spaces in Sunrise Mall now that two clothing stores and a barber shop recently opened their doors.
The city announced the new tenants in a social media release Monday, encouraging shoppers to welcome the new stores and also shop at the mall.
Hats and other clothing are on display at a store called Breakout, while Bebesitas Boutique sells women’s clothing and cosmetics, and La Estetica offers hair cuts and styling.
A barber at La Estetica told The Sentinel the salon has been open for about two months, and Sunrise Mall is the third location.
Jonathan Maldonado and Adriana Andrade, the husband and wife behind Bebesitas Boutique, say sales have been slow. The shop did less than $300 in revenue on black Friday, and has not seen any sales in the days since.
The roughly 100-acre Sunrise Mall property is slated for major redevelopment, but the timeline is expected to take up to 20 years, with development most likely starting in the outer parking areas. Meanwhile, city officials and staff have made an effort to remind shoppers that the mall remains open.
“As a reminder, the Sunrise Mall is open, and will remain open for a long time,” the city said in Monday’s update. “Please continue to shop and attend events at the mall.”
In a separate update on Monday, Community Development Director Casey Kempenaar said he expects the residential component of plans for the mall to begin first, citing interest from developers and the continued high demand for housing. The mall’s Specific Plan, approved by the City Council last month, allows for more than 2,000 residential units, along with hotels, entertainment, office space, and other uses.
