The new Fall and Winter activity guide from the Sunrise Recreation and Parks District has now been released and offers a variety of community activities for adults and children.
Preschool programs. For young children, the district offers several different preschool programs for those three to five years old. The curriculum keeps kids occupied with academics, arts and crafts, sharing, music and movement. Supervised park play is also part of the program. The cost varies for each program from $185 each month to $225.
Ballet. Budding ballerinas can also practice their perfect pirouettes on Thursdays in the Turns N Tumble class for $42. Babies 18 months to three years start class at 4 p.m., children three to six begin pre-ballet at 4:30 p.m., and ballet for children ages 6-12 begins at 5:15 p.m.
Gymnastics. For children who like to jump and tumble, the district is offering gymnastics classes through Byers Gymnastics at 7700 Sunrise Blvd. Tots 3 years old is offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Kindergym for 4 and 5-year-old children is Tuesdays at 10:35 a.m. Parent participation classes are also offered Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.
Zumbini. Parent participation Zumbini classes are Mondays at 10 a.m. at Rusch Park Community Center. Prices range from $27 to $45.
Karate. Children looking to develop their self defense skills can join Kinder Karate held Tuesdays and Thursdays. A $40 seven-week class for children ages 4-6 begins at 4:30 p.m., and children ages 7-14 start lessons at a 5:45 p.m. class, also $40.
Sports. The district is offering a number of basketball leagues for boys and girls. The leagues are aimed for children in grades two through five, and players of all skill levels are welcome. The boys league is $115 and begins November 30 while the girls league begins March 1 for the same fee.
Other sports offered by the district are a flag football league and girls’ volleyball, basketball training with Michael Shaw, soccer clinics, and junior tennis.
Adult sports for anyone over 18 include open gym volleyball on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at Rusch Park for $5, open gym basketball Thursdays at 7 p.m., also $5 at Antelope Crossing Middle School. Two basketball leagues are being offered. A Sunday basketball league at Rusch Park auditorium is $475 for each team, and a Wednesday basketball league is also $475. Game times vary.
Pickleball. The Sunrise Pickleball Club is offering drop-in play Monday through Friday, and Sundays at 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Dance. Adult dance is $40 per person at Rusch Park. A variety of dances are offered at various times.
Kayaking. Those 50 and over can join a kayaking activity for $60 on Lake Natoma on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m., and Thursday, Nov. 4, also at 11 a.m.
Other adult activities. Creative adults can fine tune their drawing skills in a four week class at Rusch Park. Start times vary, and the fee is $50, or $60 for a five week class. There are also classes in fitness, yoga, and walking.
Additional arts activities include beginning and intermediate watercolor, as well as beginning and intermediate acrylics.
Additional programs for adults age 50 and over include quilting, tai chi, bridge, ceramics, and tap dancing.
Activities listed in the park district’s latest guide are largely held at Rusch Park, but also include locations at the district’s partner facilities, like Byers Gym, Extreme Martial Arts Center, Skatetown Ice Arena, and Steve Cook’s Fireside Lanes.
