Citrus Heights News Briefs: new sales tax, pay increases, shooting

Latest local news briefs include the City Council voting 4-1 in favor of a new compensation structure for city employees, talk of a new sales tax proposal underway, and a Citrus Heights man being identified as the person killed in a recent shooting.

City Council votes 4-1 in favor of ‘step pay’ compensation increases
The Citrus Heights City Council on Thursday voted 4-1 in favor of adopting a new “step pay” compensation structure for most city employees not represented by a union. The action means employees will see a slight increase in their pay, followed by opportunities to advance to the next “step” in a 10-step compensation plan each year, with 2.5% increments. Councilman Bret Daniels joined the majority of the council in voting for the new compensation plan, while Councilman Tim Schaefer opposed the plan, citing concerns with the cost of the plan and the timing, which he said was rushed. Talk of new sales tax proposal underway
Citrus Heights Mayor Steve Miller said in an update during Thursday’s council meeting that there’s talk within the Sacramento Transportation Authority of “a new Measure A,” referring to the county’s local transportation sales tax. Unlike the failed Measure B sales tax in 2016, he said the new effort is being proposed by residents instead of government officials, which means it would have a lower threshold to pass. “I think I know why they’re doing it this way: it doesn’t require two-thirds. It’s 50% plus one,” said Miller.

Citrus Heights man identified by coroner in recent shooting
40-year-old David Reggie, of Citrus Heights, was identified as the person killed during an Aug. 5 shooting located just outside the city limits, CBS 13 reported last week. Sheriff’s Deputies had responded to the 6400 block of Verner Ave. after a man was reported lying on the sidewalk. The man was discovered to have been shot and was pronounced dead by responding medics. The incident is being treated as a homicide investigation, but no suspect information has been released.
