A free “shots and showers” event last month organized by the Citrus Heights Homeless Assistance Resource Team and Dignity Health resulted in more than 100 hot meals being served and a total of 14 individuals being given a COVID-19 vaccination.
A total of 31 guests were served at Antelope Road Christian Fellowship from April 26- 30, according to a news release. Navigator Toni Morgan was also on hand to interview new clients and check up on individuals previously served by the organization during prior events.
Guests were able to take a shower and get a COVID-19 shot, thanks to a partnership with Dignity Health. Citrus Heights police also provided security patrol during the week-long outreach, and guests received clothes, hygiene kits, shoes, and solar phone chargers, according to the release.
Previous concerns over blood clots linked to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine caused the FDA and CDC to pause its use, but the limitation was lifted after the FDA conducted a safety review. Unlike other vaccines, the Johnson & Johnson shot requires only one dose, and does not need to be kept cold.
HART plans to provide the same Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the Sunrise Christian Food Ministry on June 7, from noon to 1 p.m.
