Students in Citrus Heights and schools across the San Juan Unified School District began returning to in-person learning on Monday, following Sacramento County entering the less-restrictive “Red Tier” of COVID-19 classifications last week.
The district posted on its website that approximately 71 percent of students opted to enroll in hybrid in-person, while others remain with the option of remote learning. Students were welcomed by staff in creative ways, including staff dressed as superheros and balloon arches to walk through, the district said in an update Tuesday.
Students are split into two groups for in-person learning: Group A and Group B. Group A students began in-person learning on Monday, and Group B began on Thursday. A third group, Group C, is made up of those students who wish to continue distance-only learning during the pandemic.
The school district has implemented safety precautions including social distancing and mask requirements. Officials are reviewing potential impacts of reducing spacing of student desks to three feet, down from six, based on recent revised guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Currently, in-person learning is restricted to just two days a week, but the district is considering increasing that to four days.
The board also heard a staff recommendation to reduce certain required graduation courses and credits due to impacts from the pandemic, with action anticipated for the board’s April 13 meeting.
