Latest local news briefs include local schools teaming up to support San Juan High School after the death of two staff members, an obituary of an 82-year-old local high school alumna, and a Citrus Heights holiday display being featured on CBS 13.

Families share memories of former Sunrise Mall Santa
An outpouring of support has arisen for the former Sunrise Mall Santa, known as “Santa Rick,” who suffered health issues and has retired. CBS 13 shared an update from the family on Friday and also included interviews from families who shared fond memories of photos with their beloved Santa Rick. (See video)

Playgrounds remain open in Citrus Heights
Sunrise Recreation and Parks District Administrator Dave Mitchell confirmed last week that playgrounds remain open in Citrus Heights, amid the latest closures and restrictions included in the governor’s regional health order. Unlike stay-at-home orders in March, playgrounds can remain open. Mitchell said families are encouraged to practice social distancing and use basic hygiene, but said the district is not currently sanitizing play structures.

Citrus Heights yard display featured on ’12 Dave’s of Christmas’
The popular holiday light display at the corner of Farmgate Way and Mariposa Avenue in Citrus Heights was featured on CBS 13’s “12 Dave’s of Christmas” last week. The segment features a different display each day in the Sacramento region. (See video)

Citrus Heights schools team up to support San Juan High School, after staff deaths
Following the death of two staff members over a one-month period, San Juan High School received a donation of 100 “Spartan Strong” shirts along with well-wishes and a several hundred dollar donation last week from other Citrus Heights schools. A letter posted on social media from Mesa Verde High School’s principal said the collaborative effort was a “true sign of the strength our community has.” (See Facebook post)

Obituary: Vitus Lorene Adams (1938-2020)
Vitus Adams, a San Juan High School graduate, passed away on Nov. 22 at her home in Nevada. An obituary published last week in the Reno Journal-Gazette said she met her husband of 64 years while working at a local soda fountain in the Citrus Heights area. The two later moved to Yerington, NV. She is survived by her husband, four children, and 14 grandchildren. (See obituary)
