Giving Tuesday: These 5 nonprofits in Citrus Heights could use your help

Sentinel staff report–
December 1 is “Giving Tuesday,” a day encouraging support for nonprofits, following the holiday shopping frenzies of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Citrus Heights is home to numerous nonprofits, each focused on a variety of causes including assisting the homeless, serving the poor, helping single mothers, mentoring at-risk youth, and more.

Several local nonprofits based in, or primarily operating in, Citrus Heights are included below:

Citrus Heights Homeless Assistance Resource Team (HART). The local nonprofit was formed in 2014 to serve as a resource for those in extreme poverty. The group has coordinated an annual winter shelter for the homeless and also helped bring a homeless “navigator” to Citrus Heights to help connect those in need with resources and services. HART is planning a “Winter Respite” in January, in lieu of its winter shelter due to COVID-19.

Sunrise Christian Food Ministry. Operating at 5901 San Juan Ave. behind Advent Lutheran Church, the nonprofit has a mission to “provide five days of nutritionally balanced food supplies to each person every 30 days when an emergency occurs.” SCFM was founded in 1983 as an ecumenical effort supported by several dozen churches, organizations and individuals.

Single Mom Strong Inc. Based out of Citrus Heights at 7525 Auburn Blvd., Single Mom Strong offers support to single mothers and children through child care, classes and support.

Laundry Love Citrus Heights. Affiliated with a national organization, the local nonprofit operates primarily at the Paradise Coin Wash at 7345 Greenback Ln., serving to help homeless and other low-income residents by covering the cost of washers and dryers at area laundromats. Due to COVID-19, the nonprofit has had to modify its operations but is still active.

The Glass Slipper. Based in Citrus Heights with a “hospitality house” on Mariposa Avenue, The Glass Slipper helps at-risk girls in the foster care system through providing life-skills training and mentorship.

More local nonprofits can be found listed at Guidestar.org, along with public financial disclosure forms for registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations.
