Youth sports, adult fitness among activities offered at Sunrise Parks this fall

Updated 5:19 p.m., Sept. 29–
By Mike Hazlip– The Sunrise Recreation and Park District has released a new online activity guide with a variety of events and activities available this October through January.

The interactive online publication details over 20 classes and activities for all ages. COVID-19 modifications or restrictions will vary with each activity and all current health guidelines will be followed, a district spokesperson told The Sentinel Friday.

Adult Fitness. If you just need to get back into shape, or if you’re looking for a challenge, Sunrise Recreation and Parks has three levels of classes to improve endurance, balance, and flexibility. Walking Wednesday will be offered at a number of parks this season. The activity is free and participants will need to check the district’s website for locations. Beginning Pickleball players can step onto the court Tuesdays at 8 a.m. for a $60 fee.

Youth Sports. The park district is offering five youth sports programs this fall. Junior tennis is available for ages five to 18. A $40 soccer clinic will kick off this fall and help your three to five year old burn some of that energy. Basketball activities for two age groups aim to keep your teen or pre-teen busy on the court. The basketball clinic for ages eight to 11 is $45, and youth ages 12 to 15 can enroll in Basketball Training for $45. The flag football clinic for six to 14 year olds is $45, and a volleyball clinic for nine to 14 year olds is also $45.

Youth Programs. Children will have opportunities to get the wiggles out with baby ballet (18 months to three years), pre-ballet for three to six year olds, and ballet 1 for children ages six to 12. The ballet classes are offered Thursdays, and fees vary.

Kindergym Gymnastics will also help your four or five year old learn how to tumble and roll each Friday starting Oct. 2, for $117. Parents can joint their children in the Parent Participation Gymnastics class Fridays at 12 p.m., also $117.

Day Care and Preschool. Children will have day care and preschool programs geared toward academics, arts and crafts, music, and movement. The district requires proof of birth date and immunization records for enrollment. Sessions are monthly, and tuition is calculated from August to May. Parents must register their children in person.

Aquatics. Beginning in March 2021, several aquatics activities will resume. Sunrise Sharks will be prowling the waters of Rusch Pool once again in 2021. Activities include swim team, competitive stroke clinic, and Sunrise Swans Synchronized swim team. Tuition fees vary. Red Cross lifeguard training will be available for anyone 15 and over for $225, while adults over 18 can get their feet wet with lifeguard instructor training for $235.

Additional activities and events — including martial arts, acrylics painting, and table tennis — are also planned at various parks in the district. To see the full activity guide, click here.

According to Karey Hansen, senior recreation coordinator for Sunrise Parks, the district is also working to add additional programs, which will be updated at www.sunriseparks.com.
