Citing concerns with smoke-filled air quality, organizers have postponed this weekend’s planned drive-in screening of the movie “GOONIES.”
“Due to Unhealthy Air Quality, We will be postponing GOONIES from Saturday, September 12 to Saturday, September 19,” an announcement on social media from the Sunrise MarketPlace said on Thursday. Free tickets are still available for reservation on EventBrite.
Prior outdoor showings in the MarketPlace’s “Carpool Cinema” summer series have also had to be postponed.
The first screening in the series was to be held in the parking lot of Sunrise Mall, but that screening was postponed when concerns arose over a non-compete clause in Regal Cinema’s lease with Sunrise Mall. A screening of “Harry and the Hendersons” was also postponed last month due to extreme heat.
Despite the setbacks, the popular events have sold out a number of weekends since showings began. Kathilynn Carpenter, executive director of Sunrise Marketplace, said she hopes the events will bring much needed business to the area while giving people a chance to have a night out.
Showings are currently held in the Sunrise Village shopping plaza at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Madison Avenue. An upcoming showing of “SING” is also planned for Sept. 26, at 11 a.m., and “Grease” later the same day at 7 p.m.
Reservations can be made online on Sunrise MarketPlace’s Eventbrite page.
