A memorial ceremony to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, will be held at Sylvan Cemetery this Friday.
The observance is scheduled to begin in the gazebo area at 8:15 a.m. and will conclude before 9 a.m.
Event organizer Jim Monteton told The Sentinel in a phone interview Thursday that he remembered the country coming together in the days after September 11.
“I, along with so many other Americans said 19 years ago that we would never forget,” Monteton said. “It seems to me that we have forgotten.”
Monteton helped launch the first local 9/11 memorial event last year, which was organized by the American Legion Citrus Heights Chapter 637 in cooperation with Sylvan Cemetery. The event included a moment of silence and the playing of taps.
Organizers are hoping to see community members at the ceremony, but acknowledged some may have health concerns with this year’s event.
“We would love to have you here but if you are concerned about your health and do not want to attend – we understand,” an announcement for the upcoming event says.
Sylvan Cemetery is located at 7401 Auburn Blvd., and is known for holding annual ceremonies each Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
