Sentinel staff report–
The heavily trafficked intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Madison Avenue in Citrus Heights was shut down Wednesday morning after a two-vehicle collision involving a utility pole.
Citrus Heights police said in a news release that the incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 5th. Responding officers found two vehicles with significant damage, one of which had struck a utility pole.
Both drivers were taken to area hospitals, one with major injuries and the other with minor injuries. News footage from KCRA showed one of the vehicles involved was an older model red Volkswagen Beetle.
The intersection was shut down “for a short period of time,” police said. Westbound Madison Avenue from Sunrise Boulevard to Primrose Drive remained closed until around 10 a.m. to allow for repair of a utility pole and completion of a traffic collision investigation.
“The cause of the collision is unknown at this time but it does appear that alcohol was a factor for one of the involved drivers,” Lt. Michael Wells said in the news release.
Witnesses are asked to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department’s non-emergency line at (916) 727-5500. Police said drivers are reminded to “be attentive to the roadway and other motorists.”
