Sentinel staff report–
Nearly two dozen development projects in Citrus Heights received automatic 5-year permit extensions after the City Council authorized the action as part of a local COVID-19 relief package last month.

A staff report recommending the extension cited delays in development and construction due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The report said “it’s important to become adaptive to support and stimulate economic recovery.”

Projects automatically extended by the council’s action include 19 non-expired projects across the city, ranging from new restaurants to low-income apartments on Sunrise Boulevard and a surgery center on Stock Ranch Road.

Extensions add five years from the original approval date, meaning projects approved in 2018 are extended to 2023 and projects approved this year are now extended through 2025.

While permits can normally be extended at the request of the developer, the council’s action applies automatically and requires no further action. The state legislature has taken similar action during past recessions, but has not currently done so.

Projects listed which qualify for the 5-year permit extension are:

As part of the city’s COVID Relief package, restaurants were also given a waiver through the end of the year to convert up to half their parking spaces into outdoor dining areas.
