Drive-in movie showing in Citrus Heights sells out in 24 hours. More events planned

By Rylie Friesen-
After months of stay-at-home orders and limited entertainment options, residents quickly jumped at the opportunity to sign up for an upcoming drive-in movie showing in the Sunrise Mall parking lot.

The free “Pop-Up Movie Series” will hold its first showing on Friday, July 24, from 7 to 10 p.m. The movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, reached full capacity — 99 cars — within one day of organizers posting the event on Facebook.

Based on the outpouring of interest, Sunrise MarketPlace organizers plan to continue the showings through September, with dates and movies announced later.

“With COVID, we had to get creative,” said Kathilynn Carpenter, Sunrise MarketPlace Executive Director. “We’re encouraged that our community responded so positively, and we look forward to bringing more free movies in the coming weeks.”

According to a news release, masks and hand sanitizer will be provided. Masks will also be required when viewers leave their vehicles for restroom or food purposes.

A large LED screen will be “hoisted in the air on a truss system, allowing crisp and clear views of the movie,” the news release said. An FM transmitter will be used to send sound for the film to each vehicle, and food trucks will also be onsite for viewers to be able to eat in their cars.

The Sunrise MarketPlace (SMP) is a business improvement district made up of over 400 restaurants, professional businesses, and retailers in the Sunrise-Greenback commercial corridor. The district regularly hosts events throughout the year.
