$8.3 billion sales tax measure moves forward at near-empty meeting
Sacramento Transportation Authority (STA) members gathered largely by teleconference on Wednesday, voting to move forward with plans to place a half-percent transportation sales tax on the November ballot. The proposal now goes before the majority of city councils in the county for an up or down vote, before returning for a final vote by the STA in May.
Just three of the STA’s 16 members voted against the proposal, two of which were Citrus Heights residents: Supervisor Sue Frost and Vice Mayor Steve Miller. Garrett Gatewood, vice mayor of Rancho Cordova, also voted no. The board clerk told STA members more than 500 comments had been submitted via email, with over 400 opposed to the sales tax proposal.
Water district says it won’t shut water off for nonpayment during COVID-19 crisis
The Citrus Heights Water District said Thursday that it has suspended all water shutoffs, citing its dedication to continue delivering water without interruption. “As we work together as a community to contain the spread of COVID-19, CHWD understands the importance of ensuring that our customers continue to have access to a safe and reliable water supply, regardless of a household’s ability to become current on their bill at this time,” the district said in a statement.
Sunrise Mall closes temporarily due to coronavirus concerns
The 1.1-million-square-foot Sunrise Mall shuttered its doors at the end of the business day on Thursday. Namdar Realty Group, which owns majority stake in the mall, said in a statement that the closure was following a health order that mandated the closure of all malls in Sacramento County. Namdar said the mall will reopen “as soon as permissible.”
Obituary: Paul Anthony Maulhardt (1948-2020)
Former Citrus Heights resident Paul Maulhardt passed away at age 71 on March 7, according to an obituary in the Ventura County Star. Maulhardt and his family came to Citrus Heights in 1986 and he later retired from Terminix Pest Control in 2006. He is remembered for his “wonderful sense of humor and was known for all of his quirky sayings, which more than once caught new acquaintances off guard,” his obituary says. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 20, at 1 p.m. at Price Funeral Home in Citrus Heights. (See full obituary)
