Latest local news briefs include hundreds gathering for the city’s annual tree lighting, a big rig catching fire, the grand opening of a new playground at Rusch Park set for Dec. 11, and more.

Opening of Rusch Park playground set for Dec. 11th
A new playground at Rusch Park is nearing completion, but a construction fence still surrounded the new structure last week as finishing touches were made. The parks district most recently announced a Dec. 11 ribbon cutting for the playground on Facebook, but quickly removed the post. A park spokeswoman told The Sentinel last week that plans had been put on hold, and later announced on Monday that the Dec. 11th opening was back on. Big rig catches fire on I-80 in Citrus Heights
CBS 13 reported Friday that a big rig caught fire on Interstate 80 near Greenback Lane late Thursday night. Video from the scene shows the truck parked on the side of the road with flames being extinguished by first responders. No injuries were reported. (See video)

Challenger announces endorsement by Republican Party
Cathy Cook, one of two Republicans trying to unseat Ken Cooley (D-Rancho Cordova) in the race for Assembly District 8, which covers Citrus Heights and nearby areas, announced Thursday that she has received the endorsement of the California Republican Party. The other challenger is Carl Burton.

Hundreds gather for 23rd annual tree lighting ceremony
Crowds gathered outside City Hall Thursday night to participate in the annual countdown to the lighting of the city’s tree and other festivities. (See video and photos on the city’s Facebook page.)

Tracking feature on Apple Watch helps nab two suspects
Gold Country Media reported on Wednesday that two men from Citrus Heights were arrested after a theft victim successfully tracked the location of his stolen watch by “pinging” the phone and notifying police. (Read story)
