The Marie Callender’s Restaurant & Bakery at 5525 Sunrise Blvd. has closed its doors forever, following the same fate as the local Denny’s restaurant, which abruptly closed its doors on Sunrise Boulevard in 2017.

“We regret to announce that this Marie Callender’s restaurant has closed,” read a sign posted outside the building this week. “We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patronage.”

According to news reports, the restaurant’s parent company, Perkins & Marie Callender’s LLC, shuttered 19 under-performing Marie Callender’s restaurants, along with 10 Perkins restaurants, a diner chain with most of its locations in the Midwest and East Coast.

The closures are part of the parent company’s filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A telephone call to Perkins & Marie Callender’s, LLC, by the Sentinel for comment on Wednesday, was not returned.

The local restaurant had earned a Yelp rating of 2.5-out-of-five stars from 189 online reviewers, with negative reviews largely citing poor interactions with restaurant staff.

As previously reported in The Sentinel’s police logs, a burglary was reported at the location last year, where a driver on Sunrise Boulevard said at least two suspects were seen breaking into the Marie Callender’s restaurant around 4 a.m.

The Marie Callender’s restaurant at 5622 Freeport Blvd. in Sacramento remains open, according to the company’s website.
