What’s with that run-down building on Greenback Lane?

A white, single-story commercial brick building, built in 1962 on a half-acre lot in Citrus Heights, sits shuttered and empty at 7210 Greenback Ln. Tufts of brown grass poke through crumbled asphalt in an adjacent parking lot.

Tall weeds and the debris of a past homeless encampment in its overhanging exterior portico are visible to busy motorists on Greenback Lane who pass by. An undated exterior photo of the building site shows a red brick building with a for lease sign visible from the street.

The site of the vacant building on the corner of Greenback Lane and Shupe Drive isn’t far from the Citrus Heights Police Department headquarters on Fountain Square Drive. The building has potential to one day find possible use as the location of a small shopping center or fast food restaurant. But not for now.

Code Enforcement falls under the jurisdiction of Lt. Chad Morris, with CHPD’s special operations unit.

The building’s declining general exterior appearance recently drew the attention of the police department, who said an administrative hearing was held earlier this month to gain cleanup compliance from the property owner.

“The problem got better for a period of time, and then in the city’s opinion, began to relapse,” Morris told The Sentinel. “It has happened before.”

The property owner, identified as George Voncil Petker, appeared at the hearing, where Morris said he was reminded that if he “fails to clean up the property in a timely fashion, the city will issue a warrant and then bill him for the clean up fees required to complete it.”

Efforts by The Sentinel to contact Petker, listed by the Sacramento County Assessor’s office as the property owner of record, were unsuccessful.
