The Citrus Heights-based Capitol Pops Concert Band, under the direction of Judith Steinle, celebrated their 22nd anniversary on Saturday at Rusch Park with a performance themed “Take Me Away.”

Movie musical selections included “The Great Escape March” from the 1963 World War II movie “The Great Escape,” and contemporary selections from the movies “Aladdin”, and “Brave.”

Popular music selections from the program also included the swaggering “Rolling Stones On Tour,” Billy Joel’s “Root Beer Rag” with Laura Karr on xylophone, and the instrumental theme from the TV show Hawaii Five-O. Vocalist Scott Guemmer sang the Frank Sinatra classic “Come Fly With Me” and “Moon River,” made famous by singer Andy Williams from the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

Raffle prizes and a silent auction helped support the band’s ongoing concert schedule, and its student scholarship fund supports the education of student musicians in the band. Sponsors included the City of Citrus Heights and Sunrise Recreation and Parks District.
