Latest local news briefs include the $47 million sale of a Citrus Heights apartment complex, a local resident charged with being the hitman in a murder case, police nabbing another suspect with bait, and a recently opened shop on Auburn Boulevard closing its doors.
Citrus Heights apartment complex sold for $47M
A 10-acre apartment complex in Citrus Heights was among several large properties purchased by a San Diego-based investment group this month, the Sacramento Business Journal reported last week. According to the Journal, MG Properties Group closed escrow Dec. 11 on three multifamily properties in the Sacramento region, for a combined price of $170 million.
The Citrus Heights property, Atwood Apartments at 5400 Heritage Tree Lane, was purchased for $47 million and is comprised of 206 units situated off Madison Avenue near Sunrise Boulevard. The other properties purchased are both in Elk Grove. The Journal said the new owners plan to perform upgrades to common areas and interiors on some units. According to the company’s website, MG Properties manages over 17,000 apartment homes in the western states, with its apartment portfolio valued at more than $2 billion.
Citrus Heights man charged with being hitman in murder case
A 46-year old Citrus Heights man was charged on Dec. 19 in an alleged murder-for-hire case involving the fatal shooting of a Fremont man, KTVU-San Francisco reported Thursday. According to the news report, prosecutors allege a Sunnyvale woman hired Marvel Salvant to kill her boyfriend, Dominic Sarkar, who was found shot to death in his bed on Oct. 8.
The woman, 50-year-old Maria Moore, is accused of hiring Salvant to kill Sarkar in order to collect $800,000 in life insurance benefits. Salvant was allegedly paid $500 in advance of the killing and was reportedly promised additional money. If convicted, KTVU reported the two could face the death penalty due to “special circumstances of lying in wait and murder for financial gain.” (See KTVU story)
Parrot Planet closes after short stint in Citrus Heights
A specialty parrot supply store that recently relocated to Citrus Heights opened its doors for the final time last week. Parrot Planet first announced its decision to close in a Facebook post on Dec. 14, saying “all good things must come to an end” and announcing a 35% off sale.
The parrot shop had moved to Citrus Heights earlier this year in July, after operating out of a location on J Street in Sacramento for five years. A specific reason for the closure was not stated on Parrot Planet’s Facebook page, but a Dec. 20 posting indicates the shop’s manager plans to start up a mobile grooming service. (See Facebook page)

- Flooding. KCRA reported flooding of a parking lot near Stones Casino on Saturday after a pickup truck hit a fire hydrant and sent a geyser of water into the air. (See video)
- Arrest. Citrus Heights police said another suspect was arrested on Saturday after reportedly stealing a bait item owned by law enforcement. (See Facebook post)
- Holiday Closures. City Hall will be closed Dec. 24-25, for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The city’s regular council meeting on Dec. 27 has also been cancelled. The following week, City Hall will also be closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
