The Citrus Heights Police Department introduced a new addition to the force during Thursday night’s City Council meeting — a two-year-old black Labrador Retriever named Farley.

Police Chief Ron Lawrence told council members during the meeting that Farley is a “single-purpose narcotics detection canine” who has been with the department for about two weeks and is already credited with helping authorities discover a total of about 37 pounds of marijuana. Lawrence said one recent drug shipment that was intercepted had an estimated street value of $74,000, if it had made it to its intended destination on the East Coast.

In a news release on Friday, police said Farley and his partner, Detective Dave Moranz, are assigned to the Narcotic and Economic Crimes Investigation Task Force for the United States Postal Inspection Service, in Sacramento. Police said Farley was officially POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission) certified on Nov. 27, 2018.

He joins four other canines serving with CHPD, where they aid in officer protection, tracking, and criminal apprehension.

“After many years as a police chief, I have always wanted to swear-in a police canine, and Farley was my very first,” Chief Lawrence said in Friday’s statement. “I am excited to have him as a part of our Citrus Heights Police Department.”
