Sentinel staff report–
Those with expired or unused prescription drugs are invited to drop them off anonymously at another free “Take Back” event offered by the Citrus Heights Police Department this Saturday. The local drop-off event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the police department, located at 6315 Fountain Square Drive, in Citrus Heights.
Police announced the event on social media, along with the message “Don’t be the dealer.” The messaging is part of a nationwide campaign organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which promotes “Take Back” events as a way to help keep prescription drugs from being accidentally misused or abused when not disposed of properly.
According to the DEA’s website, a prior Take Back event held in April resulted in nearly 475 tons of prescription drugs being collected for disposal nationwide.
CHPD said in a tweet on Wednesday that this year’s event will accept both liquids and pills, whereas prior events have not accepted liquids. Medications can also stay in their containers when dropped off.
Sharp items and needles will not be accepted.
More information on the drop-off effort can be found online at Takebackday.dea.gov
