SJUSD to host two more school board candidate forums in October
Voters this month will have two more chances to hear from the four candidates running for a pair of seats on the San Juan Unified School Board. The upcoming candidate forums will be held on Oct. 15 and Oct. 25, at Bella Vista High School, in Fair Oaks, and Rio Americano High School, in Sacramento County, respectively. According to the school district’s website, each forum will run from 6-7:30 p.m. and will feature a panel of students and/or parents who will ask questions to the candidates. Obituaries: Citrus Heights loses school teacher, veterans
Annette Marie (Porter) Miller passed away at her home in Citrus Heights on Aug. 28, after an “abrupt and unexpected battle with cancer,” according to her obituary published in The Sacramento Bee on Oct. 2nd. She was born in 1958 and attended Roseville High School, before beginning work for Gold Circle and later moving on to work in the Roseville City School District and earning a bachelor’s degree from Sacramento State. After earning a teaching credential, she worked at Madison Elementary and Oakdale Elementary, where she taught several grades. She later earned a Master’s in Arts Integration and was a strong advocate for arts in school. She is survived by her husband and daughter. (See obituary)
Ronald J. Miller, a Vietnam veteran, passed away peacefully at age 71 on Sept. 26 at his home in Citrus Heights. According to an obituary published in The Sacrament Bee on Oct. 3, he was born in 1946 in Philadelphia, PA, and later graduated from East Anchorage High School in Anchorage, Alaska. Miller entered the Navy in 1966 and served four years in Guam as a communications specialist, as well as serving on the aircraft carrier Yorktown in South China Sea and Mediterranean. He moved to the Sacramento area in 1977 and worked for several federal agencies, including a position within the Sacramento Army Corps of Engineers. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law (see obituary). Another local veteran, James Cummings, also passed away, on Sept. 24. (See obituary)
Citrus Heights police hold ‘Coffee with a Cop Day’ at Dutch Bros
The Citrus Heights Police Department participated in National Coffee with a Cop Day on Wednesday by hosting an event at the Dutch Bros coffee drive-thru on Madison Avenue. A 90-second video posted by the department shows uniformed police officers helping serve up coffee orders, talking to customers and staff, and hosting a booth in the parking lot.
The national day began in 2016 as a way “to encourage communication and positive interactions between law enforcement and the public,” according to the website coffeewithacop.com. In recent years, Citrus Heights police have also been known to host Coffee with a Cop events several times a year at various local businesses. (See video)
