Citrus Heights nonprofit has a plan to help local homeless students

Sentinel staff report–
On Sept. 29, the Citrus Heights Homeless Assistance Resource Team (HART) will help host a free event aimed at helping the estimated 800 K-12 students in Citrus Heights who lack permanent stable housing.

According to a news release sent out on Friday, the “2018 Student Connect” event will be hosted at Advent Lutheran Church on San Juan Avenue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will provide a one-stop-shop for students and families to receive medical services, haircuts, housing counselling, free clothing and hygiene supplies, referral services and a hot lunch. The event is available to those in Citrus Heights, Carmichael, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale.

“I am excited about this terrific, first time opportunity to connect area families and students in transition (those lacking stable housing), with a wide variety of community providers and service agencies, all in one place, for one day,” said Ardath Ferris, a Citrus Heights HART board member and liaison of the San Juan Unified School District, in Friday’s news release.

Event sponsors include a wide range of ministries, business groups, public officials, and local churches — including the Sunrise Marketplace and Mall, Sacramento County Supervisors Susan Peters and Sue Frost, Dignity Health, The Way Ministries, and Celtic Cross Presbyterian Church.

Citrus Heights HART is a local nonprofit that was formed in 2014 with a mission to implement long-term solutions to homelessness through public-private partnerships. The group is credited with helping bring a homeless navigator to the city to help connect homeless with resources and assistance, as well as hosting an annual winter shelter program in Citrus Heights.

Through Sept. 24, the City of Citrus Heights is accepting donations of school supplies to benefit the event. Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday at City Hall, located at 6360 Fountain Square Drive.
