Sentinel staff report–
The annual Hot August Bites event in Citrus Heights will again take place at Rusch Park this Saturday, promising live music, free swimming, a beer garden, food trucks, and a car show. The free event has been growing since first launching in 2014, with organizers estimating the event attracted 1,500 people last year.
The three-hour event will take place near the Rusch Park Pool from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with free swimming until 1 p.m. and vendor booths and other activities on the grass. New highlights planned for this year’s event include live music by Jax Hammer, an expanded beer garden area, an inflatable slide at the pool, and a dunk tank in the car show area, according to Sunrise Park District Recreation Coordinator Karey Hansen.
Food truck confirmed for the event include Cowtown, Hefty Gyro, Kados, It’s Nacho Truck, Squeeze Inn and Azteca Tacos.
The car show will be open to cars of all years for an entry fee of $20 and will be put on by Nor Cal Cruisers. According to an event flier, over 40 awards will be available, along with a raffle. Fundraising proceeds will benefit the Citrus Heights Police Activities League.

Hansen said Hot August Bites originated four years ago as a spin-off of the Free Summer Concert Series that the park district and City of Citrus Heights had been co-hosting. Last year, the event also changed from an evening event to a mid-day event, in order to avoid excessively hot outdoor temperatures that had plagued the event for several years.
Best access for the event will be from the Auburn Boulevard side of Rusch Park at 7801 Auburn Blvd. Event sponsors include the Sunrise MarketPlace, Sunrise Recreation and Park District, the City of Citrus Heights, and Hot 103.5 and 101.9 The Wolf.
